I have had a love/hate relationship with the Ghosts ‘n Goblins series for a long time. Overall I love the games and their play mechanics, but I’ve always hated how insanely difficult some sections of it are. No other game has sent me into rage quit quite like this series. The original is super challenging, the sequels are borderline unfair and Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection is, by far, one of the more intense experiences yet. Still, even with its insane difficulty… you’ll love almost every second of it.
Give ‘em Hell
Tokuro Fujiwara is back in town, and his mission is murder. The Ghosts ’n Goblins foreman has been summoned by his former employer, Capcom, to impart pain and suffering upon the gaming masses, and he’s come at it with gusto. To put a fine point on the conjecture surrounding Resurrection, it is indeed anvil-through-the-skull hard; an assembly of barbaric, indiscriminate violence designed to harvest your soul and sell it into satanic slavery. It’s harder from the outset on its default difficulty setting, Legend, and the next down, Knight, than pretty much everything in the series prior. Legend is an atrocity that spits in your face and laughs, out to break you like Ivan Drago. Here, Skeleton Murderers don’t just come at you in droves within the first twenty seconds, they run like the wind from both left and right. Stages are vast, heaving with pitfalls and traps, and the landscape shifts constantly, often requiring quick reflexes to access out-of-reach sections. If you can run up a toppling monument before it hits the ground in an early section of the Graveyard, you’re rewarded with a hidden chest at its peak; while other secrets, such as purple vortexes leading to a series of increasingly difficult survival challenges, are better concealed.
Gameplay
From the very first arcade/NES entry to today, Ghosts ‘n Goblins has largely followed the same structure: fight through five devilishly difficult levels, beat some bosses, take on the big bad at the very end, and realize you forgot something critical (typically a bracelet left behind at the picnic) and do it all again, only at a harder difficulty. Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection fits that mold almost to a ‘T’ but with some notable exceptions. The first two levels offer a branching path but in all actuality, it’s just a way to pump up the level count to seven rather than just five. These levels aren’t brief, either. If you’re dying half as often as I do, expect most levels to last at least thirty minutes to an hour as you engage in some light trial and error each time Arthur is turned into a sad pile of bones. To offset the immensely hard difficulty that Ghosts ‘n Goblins is known for, Resurrection adds in one of the most generous checkpoint systems that the series has ever seen. Not only does Arthur have a limitless supply of lives to venture forth with, but he can also raise many a flag in checkpoints throughout each stage. When you die, you’re given the choice to restart the entire stage, go back to the start of the smaller area in each stage, or lastly the last pennant checkpoint that you passed. As a subtle taunt from the developers, the cursor hovers over the restart area option each time you die, making the player either mash their way to an earlier checkpoint if they’re rushing through the menus or making them go up on option to retry from the last pennant.
