Because he’s something called the Coherent, and is thus the only human who retains his humanity in the wake of the calamitous transformative effects of the Gnosis. There’s just one small problem – Omari is killed right in front of Ezra at the beginning of the game, and Ezra is wracked by grief and has a complete lack of faith in himself. In fact, his lack of self confidence is an integral part of the story, and an aspect of his character which is deeply explored as you progress. As someone who himself suffers more than a little self doubt, I really resonated with Ezra’s plight, and was happy when he found a way to move forward no matter what obstacles were put in his path.

Without spoilers, the game features a lot of drama and loss, and the path forward is often one that weaves back and forth unexpectedly takes place in the Nestrium, a gigantic tower built long ago, which is where the Gnosis is unleashed. The one thing Ezra has going for him is the titular sword, which once belonged to Omari. It’s massive for a human, and a novel take on the stereotype of traditional JRPG characters wielding gigantic blades. Here, the weight of the sword is a blessing and a curse, and players have to learn how to strategically utilize it to succeed dressed in full costume as the game’s main character, Ezra (6-foot-tall GigaSword included). All the while, Ezra has befriended one of the Nocturne and has grown to understand the crystal’s true nature and the reason it’s been under heavy guard for so long. There’s a lot here to dig into, and the story grows from there. It’s a great modern sensibility that may not have been present in games GIGASWORD is inspired by due to cartridge and technological limitations. Needless to say, things have gone awry and Ezra is thrust into the battle of good and evil and a world where many soldiers have been corrupted and demons and creatures roam the grounds of the tower that his owl-like friend once guarded the player tries to make their way to the top of the tower.

But entering its repository unleashes an ancient power and awakens an evil that could destroy reality itself.

Despite the absence of Samus, I felt like I was playing a Metroid spiritual successor. From the way Ezra controls, to the enemies, and even the map, it was cool to see a more modern approach to the Super Metroid and Metroid 2 designs. Now, is this a homerun across the board? Not really. But what the game offers is a challenging and engaging world to uncover, along with abilities and puzzles that feel rewarding sets itself apart from others is the use of the sword itself. The giant weapon drags on the ground behind Ezra as he runs from side to side and swings it with immense effort. Action is both fast and meaningful. There’s no hack-and-slashing going on here; moves are always deliberate and take some precision.

Thankfully, one thing GigaSword does loose from the NES era is the unrelenting difficulty, as my middle-aged reactions really aren’t what they used to be. Combat is satisfyingly simple and completely fair. Sure, some of the screen-filling bosses will test you, but thanks to a perfect difficulty curve and very generous check points – definitely not a feature of NES games! – your progress will not be hampered for long, resulting in an enjoyable and frustration free retro experience. If it was just the combat and the exploration of a metroidvania that GigaSword offered, along with a slightly too slow release of new abilities, it would be decent but nothing special.
