Half the time you can’t fully see the action behind showers of blood, but that’s okay – pure chaos is the point, and attacking with frantic abandon will get you through most encounters. You’ll be zipping around on the hoverboard like a floating blender, flying into hordes of unicorns and other freakish playthings. As well as his blades, F.R.A.N.K has a flail-like wrecking ball for shattering the bubble shields some enemies use. Levels to build a special laser pointer to defeat your adversary. The levels are pretty linear in direction, but themed around varying toys like an arcade, doll house and carnival. They all have fun themes and are interesting enough to keep me moving forward, but they do suffer a bit in overall design. Thematically they are all pretty unique in their puzzle design but oftentimes it can be unclear where the next direction to go is. When they do include branching paths or more open space, backgrounds tend to blend together to the point of confusion. In one instance, I solved a puzzle in a room, but it was a dead end. I spent roughly ten minutes trying to figure out where to go in that first dead end room. It’s not the end of the world, but any time wasted feels bad. The main action of Gori comes in two flavors: platforming and combat. Gori’s movement is solely based on F.R.A.N.K. the hoverboard, so they can glide, boost, jump, double jump, wallride billboards and grind rainbow rails. Since it’s a hoverboard, it’s all rather unwieldy. His movements are wild and unpredictable, and it’s easy to miss the landing or slide right off of them. Fortunately, it’s a quick respawn, but the process can be a tad frustrating from time to time, especially during gauntlet sections where you are being chased by something or boss battles that require precise movements to do any kind of damage.

Okay, the name isn’t as threatening as it sounds, as well as the fact that they’re actually toys, but you try and fight off a horde of horribly mutated unicorns. You play as Gori (pronounced “gory”), a synthetic housecat who is on a quest to save their owner and the world with the help of their foulmouthed weaponised hoverboard and a depressed ship A.I. Yeah, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds, but it’s done very well here. The writing is pretty funny, with tons of dark humour and liberal use of swears. It can come off as trying a little too hard to be edgy, but it definitely works. My biggest regret, though, was buying the upgrade to uncensor the hoverboard’s dialogue early on. A cyberpunk dystopian future (before the toys started an uprising) and almost everything you come in contact with is some sort of children’s plaything, of course there’s going to be a ton of neon lights and bright colours around the place, to the point where it might hurt your eyes if you look at it too long. There’s a reason why the game warns you of bright flashing lights because it can get quite brutal with it at times. That being said, the character designs are also really good. Gori and their allies are quite adorable and the enemies they face are… significantly less-so. They range from uncanny to outright horrifying and disgusting. And, as you can tell from the title alone, the game is very gory and you’ll be turning unicorns into mince meat in any given fight, covering Gori’s fur in their blood.

The traversal is by way of running around on foot, grinding sick rails and wall grinding along billboards. You can also remain airborne a fair while by chaining a combo together, but this isn’t that reliable. If we were really lazy, we’d write a mini-review and call this a half-baked cross between Sunset Overdrive and any number of action slashers, with a little Ratchet and Clank into the bargain. Only it lacks the refinement that was present in Insomniac’s Xbox One exclusive almost ten years ago, nor the variety in dispatching enemies from the same developer’s PS5 technical showcase. An aside, did Microsoft honestly think it would sell consoles? We only played it as we’d already backed the wrong horse at that point. What can we say, it was a birthday present.

At any rate the backstory, such as it is, is that your creator works for a toy company who is seeking their next big product. You see, Gori is an animatronic doll pet thing, but he’s ordered destroyed when the company go with a different angle. That being cute fluffy unicorns. Only they go bad and take over the already messed up world. It’s down to you to see them off. Practically this is you wading through hordes of enemies across the eight levels on offer. They start out as just basic groundborne enemies, but as you progress, enemies you face in subsequent levels are added to the opponents you face. They require you to mix things up a bit, but we cry foul at the seahorses that you faced on an aquatic level showing up on landlocked stages. One More Dungeon 2 Switch NSP
