Yet you don’t get much time to bask in the scenery, and the frantic combat will keep you on your toes. You have to use your units, abilities, and whatever terrain advantages you can get because this game is no pushover. The gameplay is reminiscent of Into the Breach, with small fields and high stakes, but Grit and Valor favors real-time combat over the slower turn-based approach. You start with your command vehicle and a couple of mechs and must hold off waves of Nazi soldiers with your limited resources. If you lose your escort mechs or your commander’s vehicle, you lose the run.

The end of the region, you’ll face overwhelming odds and defeat endless waves of elite enemies, new hazards, and kaiju-like boss mechs.

The game is meant to be hard and replayed constantly, and the depth of the unlocks is extensive. This constant replayability ensures that the game never gets boring, as each run presents new challenges and opportunities for improvement. The gameplay in Grit and Valor -1949 is separated into three distinct sections. The first is your home base, where you can use materials to upgrade your mechs with new attachments that boost durability, weapon strength, and more. Then you have the main map where you have to choose which location to go to next. Finally, there’s the combat, which is where you’ll be spending most of your time. The base section is pretty bare bones; it does what it needs to, but there’s no real pizzazz in terms of visuals or design. This isn’t like XCOM, where you can see people moving around; instead, the base here is really just a dolled-up set of menus. However, nothing is confusing, so it’s always clear what you need to do to reach a certain result. The same can be said for the main map, which is reminiscent of a lot of different roguelikes.

Capitalize on enemy weaknesses, and exploit tactical advantages to withstand the onslaught and protect the command vehicle.

Essentially, you have a variety of different paths that you can take, with some offering a fight, supplies, or a mystery. This helps to add a fair bit of variety, but it shares a common issue with many of these titles. The problem is that, at least in the early game, you’ll be doing the same opening maps a lot, if for no other reason than you don’t have the means to survive a full run a roguelite twist to it. If you know anything about me, I really enjoy playing roguelites, particularly those that have meta-progression, as the feeling of constantly getting better is something that really tickles my monkey brain the right way.

Strategy tactical battles where you take your mechs to fight the Axis forces and to complete mission objectives. That’s where you spent around 90% of your time, jumping from mission to mission. The other 10% you’ll be spending on your base, working on unlocking new mechs, equipping them, training and improving your pilot’s skills, and researching new stuff to play around with. As you complete missions you’ll accrue several different currencies which can be used for aforementioned purposes.
