Although they were included in the previous release of Accent Core Plus that hit the XBLA and PSN. Thankfully, although you won’t be given instruction on how to effectively use them, you can access each characters complete move list from the pause menu; you just have to know how to read Japanese in order to make anything of them. That is right: all of the character move lists (and even some of the character names) are written in Japanese. No translation. No indication of their meaning or purpose, Nothing. This is yet another hurdle that rookies will need to overcome if they wish to experience the title.

It seems odd that things were left this way in porting the game over from the Japanese arcades, especially when all of the other modes have received localization treatment. Whether you choose to play the arcade, story, survival, or mission modes, there is plenty of English text and voice work. However, when it counts the most, you are stuck with the original Japanese script. How does that make any sense and if you’re not a top-level player it’s doubtful the tweaks to character moves or minimal additional content will be worth the price of admission if you own a copy on another platform. If you’re totally new to the series, or to fighting games in general, then this isn’t a good place to start. There’s no tutorial, and the game doesn’t bother to explain itself. If you don’t already know what an Instant Kill is, you’ll have real trouble on the very first stage of the Mission mode that requires you to beat your opponent using one. The learning curve is practically vertical from the off. If you’ve been with the series since the beginning then you might be tempted, but here’s a kicker for you: there’s no online multiplayer – only local ad-hoc fan, or a very confident fighting game player.

You want to play it on your Vita, then this is a great purchase. But man, I’ve been playing fighting games since they existed, and I still had to put in major work just to get anything resembling a combo down. Where I can learn a solid combo for any member of the cast in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 within 15 minutes or so, anything threatening in Accent Core took a couple of solid hours to get down. And that’s without getting into the hard stuff. Guilty Gear’s input interpreter is as strict as they come, and even normal moves can have a dizzying number of unique properties that become crucial in specific situations. While this may sound intimidating – and it is – it’s this very depth that’s kept hardcore players coming back for years to level up their game. Don’t let the double-black-diamond steep learning curve dissuade you though, as you can still have plenty of fun at the foot of the mountain without trying to claw your way to the peak are tucked away under the hood for advanced players to discover and exploit, you don’t need an expert’s eye to discern what makes these characters special. The gang make that lot look like a Saturday morning cartoon. Slayer is a vampire assassin with a “come at me bro” walking animation, and Johnny’s cane-sword and fedora helped him define “swag” way before it started popping up on tee shirts. If the original had ever seen a real domestic arcade release, Ky and Sol might very well have been the next Ryu and Ken… or at least the next Scorpion and Sub-Zero well-detailed sprites instead of the widely acclaimed cel-shaded polygonal models from the more recent versions, as well as a more compressed sound department, and a 4:3 aspect ratio.

You can clearly see that it’s still a PS2 game at its core, and some of these aforementioned aspects clearly show its age. Compared to other fighting games released for the Switch, Accent Core Plus R didn’t wow me as much. Even though it’s still really pleasing to the eyes, the reduced aspect ratio and poor voice work made it feel like I was playing one of the dozens of emulated SNK fighters released for the system every single week.
