Sure, they’re both about customizable mecha and the battles take place on relatively small stages. But whereas Armored Core VI was dark, gritty, and reveled in brutal battles, Gundam Breaker 4 is far less solemn. It has a narrative and world, but at its core, it’s about playing with virtual models and seeing how they perform in combat. The lobby hub is comparable to the early villages found in classic Monster Hunter, serving as more of a connection point with various shops and systems rather than replicating an actual community.

A shame because discovering builds and busting up bots with friends sounds like a solid time, especially for fans of this franchise. That said, we were able to get a feel for the game’s story missions and build some truly monstrous mechas. A lot of mecha games get this gameplay loop right but I was impressed by the sheer amount of designs represented within Gundam Breaker 4. I have built several model kits over the years and I often browse the newest kits online so I am familiar with most mobile suits either through those storefront updates or from watching the associated anime. It did not take long for me to build a Shining Gundam and explode enemies in brilliant green explosions. There was a moment about halfway through the first chapter where I discovered that one can even build Armor Girls which look hilariously out of place. That and SD models are represented though I only found a few as of this writing. I tried to use an SD build but the damage output was abysmal so hopefully there are better SD kits to find later on. That virtual space aspect is played up quite a bit in Gundam Breaker 4 as players are introduced to a digital arcade-like world from the jump

While it is a sequel to the events of the previous game, it’s clear from the jump that it’s not required for any sort of understanding. The player in-game is a newcomer, and they’re here to take part in the beta test version of the Gunpla Battle Simulator that has since expanded to a home console release. While this entry technically carried on the story from the last game, you can jump in without any prior knowledge and be just fine. It’s a pretty meta set-up, and as part of the game’s “beta” test, you meet other players, like the smart but diffident Tao, and form a clan to become the top players. As you might expect, of course, things aren’t all that they seem, and the online game starts glitching as you learn more of the truth  story isn’t the most complex out there, but it’s a schlocky, fun time that leans into making its characters real weirdos — Mr Gunpla. Honestly, the plot is relatively simple and straightforward, serving as a great tutorial to prepare you for what really matters, which are the online game modes.
