Still, its solid controls, bright visuals, and accessible gameplay make it an easy pick-up for players of all skill levels. Next up is Dragon Breed, a standout title that redefines what a horizontal shooter can be. Instead of piloting a ship, you ride a massive, biomechanical dragon named Bahamoot. This isn’t just for show; the dragon is fully integrated into gameplay. You can manipulate its long body to act as a shield, wrapping it around yourself for protection, or use it offensively to crush enemies and block incoming fire.

In this multidirectional cute-’em-up shooter, you navigate through imaginative levels filled with puzzling maps, hidden paths, and gigantic bosses.

Dragon Breed is visually intense, thematically dark, and brimming with creative design. It blends the fantasy aesthetic with mechanical horror, giving it a unique and memorable vibe. You can pick from a surprisingly large number of color options, which include variations like BRG, RBG, GRB, GBR, alongside usual RGB. No, I’m not having a stroke here and just typing out three-letter sequences for good measure, they are individual color palettes, which alongside an equally large amount of shaders – my favorite being the arcade glow, which makes the graphics pop on my Switch OLED’s screen, just goddamn beautiful – and display ratios are as much as you can expect and more in regards to visual options in a retro compilation, perhaps even a little too much, even. I was totally unfamiliar with the games within, which makes it a bit more fun. All of the ones in Collection 3 are side scrolling shooters, mostly arcade based with one exception. The titles are Mr. Heli/Battle Chopper, Mystic Riders and Dragon Breed, and I don’t know a single of these prior to my review. Battle Chopper and Mr. Heli are basically the same game, but Mr. Heli is the PC-Engine version, which affords it almost the same graphics but substantially better controls. You can collect powerups while dodging enemies, and there’s occasionally bosses. As much as I have fondness for these classic era titles, I have to be blunt that you’re getting shortchanged when it comes to Irem Collection Volume 3. The three arcade titles have Japanese and world versions of the game, and each of the titles does have the option for playing in classic mode or casual, which is a fun perk. Classic mode gives you the straightforward gameplay, and casual lets you toggle a bunch of cheats (invincibility, full weapons) as well as rewind if you make a mistake.

But don’t go alone—in local co-op mode, you can join Mark the Wizard or Zeal the Witch on an enchanted journey through arcade history!

But, again, Mr. Heli and Battle Chopper are almost completely the same game, and Mystic Riders and Dragon Breed are cut from the same cloth. Mystic lets you fly around as a young wizard on a broomstick, and Dragon lets you fly on a…dragon. Collect charges to strike more powerfully, don’t get shot and try to max a high score. This one has so much more going on. While still a classic shoot ’em up, you have eight way scrolling, more open and (slightly) explorable levels, decent weapons and so much more to lose yourself in. There’s a weapon selection that you purchase by “mining” crystals hidden behind destructible blocks.

The little cute, orange helicopter has a lot of personality and can not just fly, but also walk on the scenery. Mr. Heli is a tough challenge, but not to the point being unfair. Enemies and bullets fly in from all directions and you really need to keep an eye on everything all at the same time. There’s a lot going on here with some really inventive level design, alternate routes, secrets to find and such. For something like a shooter, this offers up a lot to do an it is crammed with gameplay. I may as well point out that you also get Mr. Heli’s Great Adventure included.
