Just Shapes & Beats, is a deceptively straightforward concept that disguises its brilliance behind the simplicity of its design. Players that pick up the challenge will find themselves in control of a half pint rectangle, and your job is to navigate through a side-scrolling mass of pixels while an arsenal of neon shapes try to halt your progress. Should your four-sided protagonist touch any of the offending pink objects as they pass, then your health will suffer for the impact.

This mix of twin-stick shooter and bullet hell discotheque is just as easy to get started with as you might imagine. A controller is best for anybody on PC as moving around the screen is tied to the analog controls, with little else in the way of interaction required. The player cube is fairly sensitive and requires some nimble thumbs and great reactions to avoid crashing out of the game. The name “Just Shapes & Beats,” while apt, doesn’t quite encompass the chaotic, colourful, anxiety-inducing, and mesmerizing game Berzerk Studio has created, and one that perfectly executes upon its premise. Just Shapes & Beats is best described as a game about surviving the music visualization screensaver your computer probably leaves up when it’s left on idle.

Each level is set to one of more than 30 EDM tracks, ranging from ambient songs to bass heavy and erratic. Each beat, note, and melody has some sort of on-screen representation, whether in snow-like patterns falling down the screen or violent manifestations of the beat made to look like monsters infecting an otherwise cheerful visualization. Obstacles form in ways that line up with beats and melodies, and as a moving shape stuck in the middle of a song you can’t stop, each level is about surviving the chaos each song creates. It’s not really a rhythm game, but I found myself constantly relying on my own musical ear to know when and how to move in order to avoid falling prey to the physical representation of this soundtrack. Gameplay

As chaotic as the trailers may make it appear to be, Just Shapes & Beats is actually quite simple to get a grasp on. You play as a small shape trying to dodge various obstacles, and have the ability to dash for a quick burst of invincibility. These are the only actions for the entire game, and something as simplistic as this may seem limiting, but the game goes out of its way to prove that sentiment wrong.

Each level in Just Shapes & Beats tends to rely on a central obstacle for each level, while mixing it in with other various obstacles at the same time. There’s a gigantic variety of objects to avoid, such as lasers, sawblades, spikes, shockwaves, and many more. The large number of different scenarios players have to overcome makes every level feel unique, and they will be looking forward to seeing what crazy mess will be stumbled upon next.

It’s not just the level design alone that makes these levels memorable, though, it’s also the music. The soundtrack is amazing, with the music selection being top notch in every respect. Nearly every song is memorable, or at the very least extremely catchy.
