Combining the addictive “one more run” mentality of Downwell and Devil Daggers with Hades-style lightning-reflex combat and a sleek yet violent aesthetic has resulted in one of the most electrifying games of the year. There’s an obscure RPG-inspired artbook series I’m in love with called Vermis. Sold as a lost player guide to a forgotten roleplaying game, it’s full of haunting medieval-fantasy art where something is just always kind of… off. I’ve never seen that uncomfortable yet alluring aesthetic replicated anywhere else until I started playing Kill Knight.

Fast and visceral top-down, push forward combat that rewards aggression and precision

Menus and UI are sharp, yet the art and visual accompanying them give off a violent, zine-style setting where you have no idea where you are or what you’re doing but you still can’t help but love it. It’s a game full of barely comprehensible monster designs, equipment covered in spikes and blades, and menu backgrounds lifted straight from screen-printed sludge metal band shirts. I see a lot of new games come out where the mechanics are sharply defined or uniquely inventive, but they lack any sort of visual identity that matches that creativity. Kill Knight delivers on both. Your goal is simple – survive wave-based combat in a constantly evolving arena, and if you do, you’ll unlock another arena with new visuals, enemies, and hazards to tackle. You’ve got a pretty simple set of abilities to use in order to achieve that, but they all feed into each other in a circular loop that keeps your brain firing on all cylinders as you play. You’ve got a standard gun attack, and when you need to reload you can tap three different buttons to activate three different Overdrive abilities. The first thing I noticed about the gameplay was how ultra-smooth it was.

Being an admirer of top-down action games, I feel like Kill Knight is straight-fire! The gameplay involves playing as a tough knight, where you hack and slash your way into a Dark Abyss through huge amounts of intense action. The game completely depends on one’s skills when it comes to dodging, parrying, and coming up with a deadly combo. Every battle brought me to the edge as I tried to take down some insufferable monsters, brutal bosses, and fierce knights in waves. I jest with that description, but the fact remains that Kill Knight isn’t much interested in establishing an overarching narrative. Promotional material and the game’s store page on Steam lets us know we’re behind the reins of the reanimated corpse of a loyal knight, unceremoniously betrayed, cast into the Abyss, and now driven by singular goal of defeating the Last Angel, but that’s about as much as we get to work with. Telling an in-depth story is decidedly not the focus here.

There’s certainly a sense of progression to be had and appreciable differences between each level of the Abyss with regard to aesthetics and the types of monsters you grapple with. It’s always neat to see what’s waiting for you when you survive long enough to see experience something new, but there’s just not much in the way of a meaty story or character development; you’re a cool knight with big guns, so get to killing. Overall, Kill Knight is a visceral, pulse-pounding experience that knows exactly what it wants to be.

It’s the closest I’ve felt in a while to the nostalgic feeling of being in a musty arcade, sinking coins into something I know is too hard for me, but I can’t stop playing. The combat is fast and brutal, the visuals are stunning in their minimalist way, and the competitive edge of the leaderboards keeps you coming back for more.
