A variety of outlandish ball types, locations, and game modes keep it exciting. Plus, each season introduces new maps, ball types, rewards, events, and challenges—but you’ll need to purchase the game to experience that! It’s really hard to compare what it’s like to play Knockout City by Velan Studios to other games. It’s possible, for sure: Knockout City is really just a three vs. three arena combat game, but that description is too simple for how many layers there are to the game. Most people will think of Halo or Call of Duty when you say the words “arena combat.” However, Knockout City isn’t only a point-and-shoot like those games. This is dodgeball.
Latest maps
What a typical game looks like in Knockout City is three people loading into a map to play against another team of three. The first team to get ten knockouts wins the round; winning two rounds wins you the game. You don’t spawn in with a dodgeball, of course. Those are found in various spots around the map, or anyone on the team can become a more powerful ball by pressing R. Once you have a ball or a teammate in ball form, the real fun begins. The opening paragraph is a little unfair to the more traditional shooters out there, but it’s true. Successfully beating an opponent in Knockout City involves bluffs, fakes, and tricking your opponent in ways that make it feel deeper than comparable games. The most basic way to describe how this plays out is that it’s a third-person shooter incorporating the fighting game neutral. It feels incredible to master. The core of this is the lock on system; preparing to throw a ball will lock onto the nearest target. Locking on to a target means that a thrown ball doesn’t miss. I would normally hate this in an arena shooter with guns, but it’s integral here. Without the lock-on, Knockout City would be another game focused on who can aim better. There is a place for that kind of skill expression, but the real joy of Knockout City is the miniature mind games between opponents. Those would be lost without the ability to lock on to your opponents.
Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge
As seasoned dodgeball professionals over here at Nintendo Life, we’re well aware that the most important aspect in creating a successful video game based on this king of sports is nailing the sound that a ball makes as it smashes powerfully into the face and/or body of your opponent. It really needs to get that springy, rubbery, wince-inducing “thwack!” just right and, we’re happy to report, Knockout City does just that. This is a quick, slick and colourful team-based arcade sports game that gets the basics right, builds on them with some neat tweaks and twists and serves up some excellent and addictive action as a result. If you’re the type of player who tends to shy away from online competitive action, not one for the constant deaths, steep learning curves, lengthy match times or complex meta of many of the currently popular squad-based offerings, this bright and breezy effort could well be something worth dipping your toes into. Getting started, having a measure of success and, most importantly, enjoying yourself in Knockout City really is as simple as picking up a dodgeball and throwing it. It’s clear that Velan Studios — the developer behind Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit — has thought long and hard about how to make this one accessible on a very basic level and the decisions they’ve made have paid off handsomely here.
A multiplayer knockout
Are you ready to DODGEBRAWL? If you don’t want to get pummeled with rubber balls, then you’d better be. Knockout City on Nintendo Switch is a fast-paced, team-based arena dodgeball game with a variety of game modes where you’ll rely on your skill and reflexes to ensure your team tastes sweet victory. Developed by Velan Studios and published by EA, this game is positioning itself to be a popular esport, and while time will tell whether or not it catches on, I can assure you that dodgebrawl battles are a total blast. In Knockout City, you can get together with your own crew or a bunch of randos to brawl it out in 3v3, 1v1, or 4v4 matches that take you from the rooftops to the busy streets to active construction sites. Players hurl, dodge, catch, spin, juke, and even become the ball for their teammates to chuck at opponents. The game features full cross-play and cross-progression between the Nintendo Switch version and all other platforms it appears on, and the plan is to introduce new stages, modes, balls, and more with each new season.
The game has an aesthetic that just oozes attitude. The retro-futuristic design combines elements of the bright neon 1980s with the suave confidence of the 1950s. Everything from the environment to the player characters to the DJ announcer playing tunes on the moon screams cool. Which is impressive when you remember that dodgeball is famous for being played in middle school gym class. Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch NSP
