There’ll be different challenges to take on such as attending an impromptu party with not a lot of familiar faces, meandering through a hotel lobby to force awkward introductions with fellow attendees of a professional conference, family reunions, and more. For better or worse, we live in an increasingly connected world, and we spend a lot of time connected to screens — phone screens, computer screens, TV screens, etc. It’s important to “disconnect” from technology now and then though, and that is the premise of Land of Screens, a slice-of-life walking simulator. It is the latest of several similar “comfort food” types of games from Serenity Forge and Way Down Deep, and players who are already familiar with their niche might enjoy it.
If we talk about the story, we’ve spoiled everything
Land of Screens only last two hours, so to go into any real depth about the story would accidentally spoil its small handful of plot beats. But the short version is that young adult Holland and her long-time boyfriend have just broken up, and now everyone on “Social Media” knows it. (Game dialogue constantly uses the term “Social Media” and inexplicably always capitalizes it.) Holland goes away to visit her old best friend in order to distract herself from her sorrow, and she accidentally leaves her charger at home, meaning that — gasp — she will be off the grid for a while. Holland goes on a few additional short adventures after that, both planned and unplanned, but she continues attempting to resist the urge to check her social media updates. She meets old friends, new acquaintances, and hangs out at a small-scale family reunion. However, in almost all cases, people are glued to their screens wherever Holland goes, to the point that it just becomes silly and excessive. The only “gameplay” in Land of Screens, if you want to call it that, is walking back and forth to talk to different people, learning about them, and realizing that some disparate people have things in common.
Gameplay
Then Holland gets those people to put down their phones (etc.), talk to each other, and create a meaningful human interaction. That’s basically the entire game, and there are no genuine puzzles to solve. (The game did bug out and soft-lock during a hiking scene though, when a “dad” character erroneously repeated a line of dialogue and left screen. I’m only mentioning it so the developers can fix it when they inevitably read this.) The story of Land of Screens isn’t quite as heavy-handed with its theme of “disconnecting” as I’m making it sound here, but it’s definitely close to that. The dialogue in the game vacillates between adequate and utterly hokey, evoking the style of the weaker Wong Fu Productions videos. Death Come True Switch NSP

Most of the characters don’t even stick around long enough to see much development, and what’s present is pretty trivial. When the game is over, Holland doesn’t come to any dramatic realizations about herself or other people; she just feels a little better than she did a few days prior. And that’s perfectly fine and goes with the territory of telling a slice-of-life story, but it limits how many people a game like this is really going to interest. Conversely, the art style of Land of Screens is utterly beautiful, and I felt an unusual compulsion to take a ton of screenshots for this review, despite only a few actually appearing here.
Story
Aside from a sleeping dog that totally did not look like a dog, the art is pretty immaculate across the board. The music is similarly soothing and fits the art well. So, that’s what you get with Land of Screens. It’s a short, on-the-nose story about disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with friends and family, and the art and sound are exponentially more noteworthy than the writing. But for only costing six dollars (or less on discount), it’s actually worth the asking price. Otherwise, this review finds Land of Screens is a highly clumsy and forgettable effort on Nintendo Switch, but its aesthetics are so good that it’s a decent way to spend a couple hours anyway.
