At any time in the game, you can press the R3 button to switch between updated graphics and older ones, and the points of comparison become quite obvious, highlighting the hard work put into it by the artists. I heartily enjoyed learning both the protagonists’ stories and abilities through the progression, and it shows off a mix of game design and writing that many modern developers can learn from. The narration and voice acting breathe so much life into the game, even now when the industry is flooded with exceptional voiceover work. Simon Templeman and Michael Bell have left their own legacies powerfully through Kain and Raziel, and it remains an integral part of the experience. Without these two protagonists, the world would feel so much emptier. With it carrying on from where Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 left off, you’ll find yourself pretty lost if you jump into Legacy of Kain: Defiance without playing it first or at least familiarising yourself with its events.

Credit where credit’s due, you do unlock new combat techniques as you progress, and also upgrade the singular weapon used by both Kain and Raziel, the Soul Reaver, making new abilities available. These don’t make the gameplay that much more enjoyable or exciting, though. Perhaps what’s most fun here is using your telekinesis powers to throw your enemies over battlements or onto spikes, but even that gets old pretty quickly. Still, like most remasters, this is mainly for those who already hold the game in high regard, who will approach it with rose-tinted spectacles. And chances are they’ll love it. The visuals here have been given a substantial overhaul, and there are no qualms with performance.

And thanks to its history of Nosgoth some newcomers might even want to give it a try. There’s one thing for sure; while their gameplay is undoubtedly dated, the story told by this trilogy of Legacy of Kain games remains a cut above your average video game yarn. The characterization still takes a bump due to how awfully impish, and frankly annoying, Raziel continues to be with his main-character main character syndrome.

Kain, on the other hand? Elevated above it all, Simon Templeton’s performance easily deserving of a spot in the pantheon of all-time VA performances, and a testament of how to sound cocky with charisma and knowledge. It’s how you enunciate, and Raziel simply fails, even when he does have the upper hand. The atmosphere, in line with the world-building, has also taken a step back, and while the latter could be forgiven for not needing to establish any further, the former fails due to how tone-deaf this remaster can be. While a fresh coat of paint, alongside new unlockable costumes for Kain and Raziel in the new graphical option, sounds all nice and dandy, the only thing they’ve underlined and undermined is how well directed the visual design was to begin with.
