It is very easy to like the prominent characters, and seeing the other residents on the train mind their own business while we are running around doing research, sometimes eating, sometimes gambling, made the world of the game feel quite lively. As a point-and-click adventure game, Loco Motive feels very reminiscent of games from the ‘90s like Monkey Island. As you consider how each character’s perspective—and inventory—can contribute to the larger mystery. The puzzles often balance on the edge between clever and frustratingly illogical. Some solutions seem so far-fetched that I actually frowned at my screen at times. Fortunately, detective Dirk Chiselton, who you can call up by using the phone on the train, offers a hint system that reduces this frustration. I always like it when there is an option to ask for a hint in these kinds of games. It is also very nice that the hint system in Loco Motive is integrated into the setting of the story.

So as not to give too much away, but they become clearer the more often you ask for hints. Fortunately, I did not need Dirk Chiselton’s services all that often, despite the fact that I completely lost track every now and then full direct control options on any modern gamepad as well, with a surprising amount of customization options for both control and audio/video displays (including a dyslexic mode and the ability to change font size and speed).
