Lone Ruin Switch NSP Free Download Romslab Though it flew under a lot of radars, Cuddle Monster Games’ Hell is Other Demons was a standout platform shooter of 2019, featuring razor-sharp, ultra-tough action gameplay alongside a delicious neon aesthetic. Considering it was mostly the work of just one man by the name of Hannes Rahm, Hell is Other Demons was an impressive achievement and a great example of a niche classic. Rahm’s latest project is Lone Ruin, which feels in a lot of ways like a spiritual successor to that initial release. That same dark atmosphere and intense gameplay are present, but now things play out in 3D. ROMSLAB.COM Best Switch Games

Though Lone Ruin doesn’t feel like it quite meets the bar its predecessor set, it still manages to be a raucously good time while it lasts. Lone Ruin is all about the gameplay, which is equal parts thrilling and simple. A typical run involves you entering a room, clearing out all waves of enemies, collecting the reward (if you survive), then moving on to the next room. Most enemies go down after just a few shots, but the tricky part comes in with how easily you can get swarmed by them. Some enemies can shoot lasers and projectiles while others may explode on contact, and when things really heat up, there’s scarcely a square inch of space to be found onscreen where your character won’t be hurt.
Looking for a different challenge? Take on the Survival mode for a timed, wave-based game mode. How long can you survive against the rising difficulty and increasingly tougher foes?
Luckily, your character is pretty light on their feet, and they also have a dash move on a small cooldown that can grant a few i-frames of respite while you reposition. Lone Ruin from Cuddle Monster Games is a twin-stick shooter roguelike that tries its best to replicate that sort of addictive, cyclical gameplay. Playing as an unnamed, explorative mage, you enter a ruined magical city in search of the power nestled within its crumbling walls. As you dive deeper and deeper, you sling your arsenal of spells at the fiends and monsters that seek to halt your progress. The Crackpet Show Switch NSP

It’s a simple, minimalist set-up with little in-game lore or even cutscenes. A lot is left up to interpretation, but the lack of story trappings means it’s all the easier to jump into each run unhindered. And that’s part of the fun of these games, after all, the ability to dive straight back into another run-through after biting the dust. This is part of the roguelike formula that Lone Ruin understands and that short gap between demise and renewal makes it harder to resist the urge for another go. Super Rare Originals, the newly formed publishing house from the team renowned for their work on limited physical print runs of popular indie titles, have recently released Lone Ruin.
Fight your way through blood-pumping battles and more than a whole host of enemies and multiple bosses in several distinct, hellishly vibrant areas.
Developed by Hannes Rahm, it’s a spell-based roguelike twin-stick shooter that utilises a neon lit colour palette and a focus on magic to engage fans of the genre. In its opening hours, Lone Ruin offers some good ol’ fashioned roguelike fun. You select from a wide variety of spells, defeat enemies as you venture deeper into the ancient ruin and choose from a plethora of power ups to increase your chances of success. There’s also an effective risk versus reward system. Completion of each room then provides you with a choice of two paths — you may be low on health and one of the rooms is offering a chance to heal, yet the other path has your favourite spell. It does a great job of keeping things interesting with each run. Unfortunately, one thing I feel is lacking is variety. Certainly, repetition is part of the roguelike experience, but there also needs to be something to keep the experience fresh at all times. Otherwise, the experience stagnates, and the player will start to lose interest. There’s a decent selection of spells at your disposal from the start, but beyond those, there are only a few left to discover. And I found that many of the spells weren’t super useful either; perhaps this comes down to my tastes, but most felt pretty limited in their utility.
It’s dangerous to go ‘lone, so pick the spell that best fits your play style to survive the hazards of the Lone Ruin.
Their drawbacks usually superseded any potential benefits, and that’s before you get into any of the upgrades. Unfortunately, spending a little more time with Lone Ruin is when the cracks start to show. Enemy types aren’t nearly interesting enough, the rooms become less and less inspiring as time goes by, and repeat runs conjure the same bosses that leave a lot to be desired. It’s a shame because, at its core, the simplicity of the combat and the intensity with which the waves of enemies swarm at you makes for an excellent combination.

This, coupled with the three different difficulty levels and the additional survival mode, offer promise that just isn’t fulfilled. Where the game does deliver is with the combat. It’s fast and fluid whilst still retaining an element of strategy that ensures it doesn’t become a button-masher or a game of hit and hope. The dash mechanic is excellent, as is the spell options that are applied to ZR, R, and L buttons. It did take a little while to get used to using the additional spells obtained throughout a run, but it becomes second nature relatively quickly and is very slick.
