You see the titular father and his assistant converse in his blood-spattered lab. You don’t know yet what kind of awful things the middle aged man is up to, though you should be able to guess. Obviously it’s nothing good, and Aya will be the one caught in the horrifying middle of it… It isn’t long before Aya gets out of bed to find corpses shambling through the halls, accompanied by murderous dolls holding all manner of weaponry. This is where you take control, guiding Aya out of harm’s way while occasionally completing QTEs in a top-down perspective.

Really nails the art of jump scares, as the various segments are designed to absolutely blindside a player.

Some of them require you to input various directions before you creep to safety, while others pop up quickly and expect just one correct response. You might at first believe this title wouldn’t dare give this child a brutal, gory death. However, that assumption dies screaming when you press “down” instead of “left” during a stealth segment, and watch while a doll twists Aya’s head all the way around. Gameplay is mostly exploration and puzzle solving with no real combat, similar to 3D titles like ‘Remothered’ or even ‘Outlast.’ The puzzles on offer here are really good though. They’re challenging but not to the point of frustration. Likewise, the exploration – which is something I often struggle with – is all landmarked beautifully. I rarely, if ever, lost my way as the design of the maps and the signposting of events was handled incredibly well. It’s a real testament to the designers having a clear vision of what they want the player to do, but always making the player feel like they figured it out, all by themselves.

Compared to much bigger games, like ‘The Dark Occult,’ the game never finds itself making the player backtrack for miles, sure they’ve missed out on something. He tells her that everything Aya’s father has done is not what it seems and tells her to just leave him to die. Aya, despite knowing that the mansion is dangerous, decides to go and rescue her father at all costs and to find out who or what placed a curse on him. All while finding out the harsh truth about her father. Despite Mad Father not being a long game, its story is quite impactful and is definitely something to enjoy from start to finish. There is a lot to unpack and many mysteries to go through in the entire game, it’s honestly a story that I enjoyed back then and something I enjoy to this day as well. The atmosphere is creepy and is something I must give this game praise for; each area is detailed in a genuinely wonderful way. You have nice calm areas on the surface but deep down there is the disturbing mess of a mad doctor. I loved how it was presented and it is something I give praise to. The point is this game isn’t messing around. Aya’s life is at stake, and her slip-ups won’t be pleasant in the least.

You’ll need to make use of chainsaws, knives, hammers, even bottles of eyeballs to explore every inch of the terrifyingly mad mansion.

Think before taking action, it’s watching this girl collapse into a red pool over and and over again… I know everyone loves to write off visceral scares as lower tier frights, but few realize how effective simple shocks can be when handled effectively. In that respect, Father’s gruesome fates deliver, eliciting exactly the kind of effect they should from players. Thankfully, Aya is neither of those, as her youth and naivete help to complicate the situation a bit. You see, Aya’s main objective here is to find her father and ensure his safety. However, as she advances through the tale, she begins to discover the truth about her dad and his experiments, and questions whether or not he is worth saving. Regardless of what she encounters, she still loves her father and can’t give up on him. The thing is she has to meet the people her father has wronged face to face quite often throughout her travels, be it vagrants he brought home to torture or dogs he procured for testing.
