For example, there’s not one, but two sections where you meet a character who is obviously the person you’ve been hunting down, but your dumb character believes them when they deny it…only for them to completely shockingly reveal they misled you less than an hour later where monsters abound and utter ruin appears inevitable. My moderate enjoyment of it all, Mandragora‘s storytelling is undeniably where I was the least engaged. It’s mostly on me, though, as someone who vastly prefers protagonists not made with player character creators; it’s just trying for me to feel investment that way. But even beyond that personal point, I found the sheer sense of scale and adventure to be where this title excels, rather than specific avenues of written interaction or introspection. Some of the NPCs that you meet will join your ‘camp’ that you establish, acting primarily as merchants and artisans. There’s Ulfar the Blacksmith, who can craft weapons and armor. Even though Mandragora looks like a classic Metroidvania, it has a few surprises in store, even if you’re already fed up with the genre. The focus is clearly on brutal combat. If an obstacle blocks your path somewhere, it’s often less about returning later with a new item and more about finding a key or shortcut nearby.
