The game, though simple, quickly draws you in to its world and its various stories and secrets. At first its almost overwhelming, but soon as you acclimate it does grow a little predictable and eventually repetitive in the long run. But the rewards of your efforts are never far off so its easy to spend hours caught up in your adventures, keen to see the fruition of your actions a lot of your progress down to luck, after all the market algorithms are random and there are certain events that may trigger as you travel from place to place which may help or hinder you.
A good trader must know everything about their market. They’re always on the lookout for opportunities, always keeping their ears open.
So much so that I switched to the easier mode so that I may make enough progress to formulate my review. Again however, with enough persistance I am sure I would’ve made the necessary progress over a longer period of time so it isn’t as if the standard mode is completely unreasonable. Kaidan is a fictitious world set in an medieval time, the map hosts a land of many cities, towns and villages. Also dotted around are various places of interest such as mines and towers where you can plunder for goods or explore to discover hidden treasures (and hidden foes). It’s a charming setting that lends itself to the games formula. WHIP! WHIP! Switch NSP

It takes a little digging and an eye for detail to truly appreciate it but I quite enjoy that about it. The overarching tale of avenging your father does become a little difficult to follow, I found myself losing track of a lot of the finer detail as it’s told using text. That and the fact that the story serves mostly as punctuation between hours of trading and exploring made me quickly lose focus of what I had to do to get ahead in the story. Though you can always refer back to the games Journal if needed the sole surviving heir to a once powerful noble dynasty, who sells his family ring and decides to endure the life of a travelling merchant.
With that, you must roam the world, searching for opportunities to make a profit.
Aiming to climb back to the top of the social (read: financial) ladder, and avenge his kinsmen’s death. Unlucky for him, his wheeling and dealing is controlled by you, the average hardcore gamer, in Forever Entertainment’s Merchants of Kaidan. And unless you’re willing to put in hours of grinding, swearing, and frustrating map-cross-referencing, his family’s enemies are almost certainly going to have the last laugh. Kaidan is a trading simulation game (which you may be familiar with if you’ve played Sid Meier’s Pirates, or the Patrician series), where the fundamental game mechanic is buy low and sell high. Only sometimes succeeds, in spicing up the genre by adding a couple of different elements to the game. You can finish quests to boost your income (all of which are the basically just different variations of “Pick me up in this city and take me to another!”), explore ruins and abandoned buildings, make investments by founding massage parlors, monasteries and other establishments, and hire different crew-members for your caravan of trade-wagons. And then there are the random events. The map view of Kaidan that you are presented with might seem overwhelming at the beginning of the game.
A challenging trading game with RPG elements you start out humble: a cart and a bag containing some gold and silver coins are all you have.
Initially, I didn’t think anything of it but then I realised that this wasn’t the true size of the world and there were even more locations on the map. The key to success is sourcing stock at a low price and then taking it to another location where those goods are in demand and sell at the most profit. For example, one of the best places to buy hides would be from a farm that specialises in animal husbandry. Fill up your cart with as much as you can and then transport them to one of the nearby cities where you can sell them. The challenge is discovering where on the map is the best places to buy and sell your goods.

If you keep going backwards and forwards trading between the same locations you run the risk of highway men ambushing your cart and stealing your possessions. Furthermore if you keep supplying the same goods to the same locations, eventually the demand for that item will diminish and the prices will drop, much like the real life supply chain. Other factors that affect market prices include the seasons and unforeseen random events such as natural disasters. All these elements make the game a challenge to master. The world of Kaidan is inhabited by a vast array of NPCS that you encounter on your travels. Whiskey Mafia: Leo’s Family Switch NSP
