There’s a handful of interesting unit types, each with a very clear niche that they fill. Cobblestone Golems have a lot of health but aren’t great at dealing damage quickly, Plank Golems are the opposite, Mossy Golems heal, etc. The fact that it is so straightforward is great, as it makes it easy to jump right into the action without a steep learning curve or thick manual to memorize. The commands you give your soldiers tend to boil down to “go kill things over there” or “follow me” and are equally easy to issue whether you’re using a gamepad or mouse controls. That’s partly thanks to armies being made of dozens of units rather than hundreds, which keeps things manageable. It’s genuinely fun to smash the gate of a Piglin Fort and send in a horde of your own to run roughshod over everything in its path. There are some drawbacks to that simplicity, however.

In theory, certain units work great as counters to specific enemies – Skeleton Archers, for example, should be the go-to choice for dealing damage to the massive flail-wielding Portal Guards from a distance. Traveling around the map will often reveal new crafting components, mounts, enemy bases, and more. Everything you build here will cost Prismarine which is obtained from destroying enemy bases, as well as a certain type of resource and amount. So-called “Nether portals,” spreading chaos and destruction. To thwart the bristling villains, the world’s three helpful guardian spirits equip you with practical abilities. The first is the ability to send out helpers that automatically harvest various resources. All you have to do is mark a small area in the game world, and your stone and wood reserves will quickly increase. With appropriate upgrades to your base, you can later also mine coal, iron, redstone, and diamonds. Valuable lapis lazuli and prismarine, however, can only be obtained by defeating piglins or dismantling piglin buildings. Furthermore, the guardian spirits—provided you have sufficient resources—enable you to place unit spawn points, defenses, and various special buildings. Once you have enough material it will be available in the menu and can be built automatically where ever there is enough space and if the surface permits the build. Ally spawners can be built to summon armies of your own to combat any enemies, but these allies are kind of braindead and need to be directed where to go many times during battle. You can’t sit back and send troops, you have to make sure they aren’t running in circles or just standing with no direction constantly, so you will be doing a lot of the fighting while your allies attack enemy spawners, portals and enemy defense towers. In some battles, original Minecraft enemies or “mobs” like Zombies and Skeletons will show up and can be directed to on your side against the Piglins.
