I enjoy Spring days and I enjoyed this latest, perhaps final installment in the Momoverse. However, both of these things exist in between the extremes of their colleagues, and as a result, don’t leave the strongest impact possible. Both are still worth appreciating though, especially since they’re gone before you know it. If the above comparison seems a little pretentious, then rest assured that the game at least is not. Moonlit Farewell executes the tried and true exploration-focused platforming formula without any major gimmicks or deviations. What you see is what you get, which works well enough but hampers its ability to be a grand conclusion. I (and I suspect most people) got into the series with its immediate predecessor, Reverie Under the Moonlight. That game tinged its pleasantness with a distinctive sense of foreboding, further enhanced by its nature as a relatively standalone prequel. While Moonlit Farewell retains a similar visual style to Reverie, its threatening sense of the unknown appears notably diminished.
A divine mission to save her people from imminent destruction at the hands of the demon hordes summoned by a malevolent bellringer.
This change comes across in the details of its visual design as well as its nature as a more direct continuation to the rest of the series. Put simply, Moonlit Farewell doesn’t expand on a lot of the more subtle charms of its immediate predecessor. Instead, it opts to be more inviting in its tone in order to presumably welcome newer players while also better tying the entire series together as a coherent whole. For anyone unversed in the Metroidvania genre, Moonlit Farewell is a 2D adventure game where you explore areas to the best of your ability. ANNO: Mutationem Switch NSP

Finding new gear and powers that ultimately will help you cross into other areas that can be seen but are out of reach. Having been many years since the last Momodora game (eight actually, imagine my surprise), I found that Bombservice found a good middle ground in building a welcoming but also keep the player challenged thanks to good enemy placement and fairly good pacing between new power upgrades. It’s visuals are also gorgeous, from the lighting to the character sprites, this game is beauty incarnate for the pixel art fan. Momo is a capable warrior, though she does start off a tad weak.
Presents the account of the greatest calamity to befall the village of Koho, five years after the events of Momodora III.
She has two modes of attack: a simple three-button melee combo with her trusty Sacred Leaf and a bow and arrow attack. As you explore the realms, you’ll find Sigils, companions, berries that strengthen your basic stats, and more. It won’t take long for you to go from simple leaf slashes to your screen exploding with magical swords and fire effects. Enemies collapse with a satisfying boom and a brief screen pause, giving the world a much-needed weight to your moon-influenced cleansing. That doesn’t mean all of Moonlit Farewell’s baddies are chumps, though. Anne’s Zombie Odyssey Switch NSP

Many of them can inflict status ailments that drain stamina and health, and even a small nuisance becomes a greater one when placed in the right spot. Thankfully your dodge button is always available, though limited in consecutive uses. The window for invulnerability given by the dodge button is fairly large as well, so even if you find yourself swarmed by baddies, keep calm and dodge-on. Along the way you’ll discover a bevy of collectables that contribute to your combat prowess in different ways – Sigil cards can be collected and equipped to give you different unique attack properties.
They will also be able to secure the village’s safety, and most importantly, the sacred Lun Tree’s, a source of life and healing for Koho…
Like flame arrows or gusts of wind from your melee attack. You can also collection Companions who will sometimes heal you or attack enemies or find items, and will also look adorable while doing it. But on top of that, there’s a constant drip-feed of berries that upgrade your stats, flowers that increase your attack, and hidden fairies that lead to additional unlockables – you always have something to chase and discover in the world of Momodora: Moonlit Farewell. Some optional, many required, and all breath-taking. A lot of the boss encounters in have jaw-dropping cinematic moments to them that I haven’t seen in any other sidescrolling metroidvania.

One boss dynamically triggers their 2nd-phase and an epic change in music when you clash blades halfway into the fight, while another boss battle is stumbled onto mid-progress as you end up joining a familiar friend to take down a rampaging harpy. While some of these fights aren’t exhaustively difficult (especially if you’ve been diligent about collecting upgrades), they’re always an audio-visual delight calamity that saw demons lay waste to Koho, you play as Momo, a priestess for Koho village who has been sent by the Patriach to uncover who is summoning the demons and stop them before Koho is completely overtaken.
