As her name suggests, Ms. Splosion Man is a being of pure kinetic energy. Rather than being able to jump (a rather important ability for any platforming heroine), she can ‘splode’ in order to both destroy scenery and leap off the ground. You can chain up to three of these elevating moves at once, but you’ll need to touch back down on the ground – or slowly slide down the side of a wall for a few moments – to recharge your innate powers.

You can jump (excuse me, “explode”) up to three times before needing to reach ground to recharge. Each successive explosion propels you less far, incentivizing the use of wall panels and exploding barrels strategically placed along each segment to propel her the proper distance. This is a platformer, plain and simple. Each level requires the use of explosions to navigate a variety of obstacles or timing puzzles to reach the end of the level, which is literally a finish line you’ll dance into with light up disco floor panels.

Gameplay

As for the gameplay, much like with the first Splosion Man game, I tend to think of Ms. Splosion Man as being something like a cross between Donkey Kong Country and Sonic the Hedgehog… but with explosions. Ms. Splosion Man doesn’t have Sonic’s speed, but there’s definitely the same sort of energy propelling you forward through the game’s levels, and there’s definitely a skill to the timing of jumps to get through these levels that felt a bit like some of the tougher levels in the Donkey Kong Country games. Overall, this game is fun, challenging, not overly-cerebral, but not brainless either. There are a few things that Ms. has that, if I recall correctly, weren’t in her guy’s title. There are new rail sequences, a new co-op mode complete with its own levels built around the feature, and even an unlockable “Two Girls, One Controller” mode that allows one player to play the co-op levels on their own, coordinating two characters’ movements. On the whole, I’d say this game’s co-op is pretty good, and just as much of a draw as the single-player campaign.

Story

Obstacles develop including navigating moving platforms and stringing together chains of events that rival Rube Goldberg machines. General movement and jumping feels imprecise at times and Ms. Splosion Man feels a little too sticky when wall jumping, but is easy enough to get used to. Personality is injected into every second of the experience – an intro with a manic Looney Tunes sensibility is a highlight. She walks while finger-wagging, cycles through different dances when idle, babbles various pop culture phrases old and new, and obnoxiously yells and whoops. Even loading screens have a bizarrely random humor with “tips” about shoes and beef mixed in with general game tips.
