Those icy winds are important and form the basis of the story. You play the role of two characters, Nuna and Fox. The two companions embark on a mission to find the source of the blizzard, which is destroying Nuna’s village. Along the way, you face several dangers, from polar bears to a nasty man who really wants Nuna’s weapon. The environment itself is also hazardous, from falling ice shafts to gusts of wind that threaten to blow you off a cliff. Most of your time, though, is spent solving puzzles to proceed. As a single player, you can control both Nuna and Fox, swapping between them easily by a quick press of the X button. There’s also the opportunity for cooperation, with two players controlling one character each.

Never Alone: Arctic Collection – or Kisima Ingitchuna in Iñupiat – is such a story told through the medium of a story-driven 2D puzzle platformer, allowing the player to join Nuna, a young Iñupiat girl and her friend, an arctic fox, on their journey through the Alaskan wilderness. Not only is the player taken on their journey, but they’re also given the chance to learn about the Iñupiat culture in detail. Playing as a young native girl Nuna you decide to set off on an adventure to discover the source of a sudden blizzard which has covered the village preventing the residents from hunting. After a daring escape from a polar bear you team up with an arctic fox who then joins you on your quest. It’s a nice tale brought to life by its narrator who voice acts in the native language with unique cutscenes which display artwork from the culture.

These can usually be accessed during load screens between the chapters but you can choose to focus on the game and view them later. Most of these unlock with natural game progression but some unlock by finding owls hidden in the levels. As someone that loves folklore I really got a kick out of learning more about the inspiration behind this title.The gameplay is simple to pick up and play for gamers of all skill levels. If you get a bit stuck the game gives you some hints to point you in the right direction. Even if you do fail you instantly restart at a nearby checkpoint. This is a game designed for you to comfortably see to its conclusion.The game is a platformer with the story coming in waves. Over the course of eight chapters, we learn about the Inupiat people and their culture. The player learns through videos found throughout the levels, either by finishing it or finding hidden owls. The levels are completed using both Nuna and Fox swapping between the two to solve puzzles or add a second person to complete the levels in local co-op. The platforming in the game varies from easy to hard, depending on the level and what needs to be completed.

Nuna has access to a Bola, a thrown set of rocks and rope that flies like a star, while Fox also has access to spirits who appear when she is near, these spirits can be used in multiple ways, from platforms to climbing holds and was a unique bit of the gameplay. The DLC Fox Tales uses the world differently. Most of the mobility in the game is in the water by paddling in a canoe or swimming below the surface to solve problems. Fox Tales uses spirits in a variety of different ways. Sometimes they’re enemies that might grab Nuna or Fox or blast currents through the water, even gifting stones to help solve problems. The game also features prominent videos and interviews with the Iñupiat people. Telling the player where the stories come from and what they are about was a highlight of the game. Learning many new things about the culture and the people involved in the game was fascinating. It made me want to go back and find the owls and videos I had missed once I had completed the game. The music is beautiful, the tunes are subtle and unique, and the characters sounds and emotions are conveyed through the sound effects with ease. I often heard Fox whimper or Nuna cry out in pain when the other died or fell. Never Alone’s graphics are well suited to the Nintendo Switch, where I played in both handheld and docked modes, and the game looks marvellous in both scenarios.
