There are multiple references to the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four as well, including finding physical copies of the book throughout the apartment building, and stumbling upon Easter eggs like this is always a delight. Despite the familiar themes, Observer never feels derivative; it’s more of a love letter to the works that came before than an imitation. Being a cybernetically enhanced Observer, Dan Lazarski has a few extra tools at his disposal: he can use EM Vision to analyze electronic equipment, Bio Vision to identify biological materials like blood, and Night Vision to make dark spaces like the building’s creepy basement easier to navigate. You’ll use these abilities to track down whoever’s murdering the building’s tenants, sometimes following a literal trail of blood in your quest to stop the killer and find Dan’s son. Oh, and you can plug into a chip in dead people’s brains to explore their memories, like you do. Unlike many games in the survival horror genre, Observer: System Redux doesn’t use violent combat or “run and hide” mechanics (for the most part) to create a creepy atmosphere. Most of the gameplay focuses on exploration and contextual interactions with the world around you, much like Gone Home or What Remains of Edith Finch. Observer is proof that you don’t always need the threat of a sword-dragging physical manifestation of guilt or a nine-foot-tall vampire lady to make a game scary (although those clearly work too).

When your past catches up with you one day, you’re on your own. You have to solve the mystery surrounding your own son’s disappearance.

It doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares, instead creating a building sense of dread through the environments, ambient music, and sound effects. Horror is subjective, of course, but as someone who both enjoys the genre and is easily frightened, I found myself muttering “Nope, nope, nope” while exploring a darkened basement and yelped out loud more than once during the 10-hour campaign. That’s why it’s such a shame that developer Bloober Team felt the need to include a handful of stealth sequences that completely broke my immersion in its otherwise tense world. For story-related reasons I won’t go into, you’ll find yourself being stalked by a menacing creature at a few different points, and you’ll have to hide and sneak around it to progress. Each one stretches on for way too long and completely kills the vibe. And the longer one them goes, the more aggravating it becomes, especially when you’re trying to decipher vague objectives while stuck sitting around for the enemy to make its rounds again. It’s hard to be scared when you’re so annoyed. Lazarski finds himself in this apartment building after receiving a call from his son, who he hasn’t spoken to in some time. They’re not on good terms, with past issues hinted at. Yet today, his son called and then got cut off. When you arrive at his apartment, you find that’s not the only thing that’s been cut off. Despite having a body, however, you aren’t able to identify the owner. That’s a bit unusual as Lazarski is an Observer. Observers have a variety of tools at their disposal, such as Biovision and EM vision, different views which let you search for clues.

Nothing remains hidden from you, no secret is safe. Whoever you interrogate confesses.

Throughout Observer: Sysxtem Redux, you’ll need to search different rooms for even tiny clues which can help lead you to the killer, all while hoping the body you found isn’t your son. Lockdown happens to hit shortly after finding the body, and then you’re trapped in the complex. So are most of the building’s residents, all trapped in their apartments. As a result, you’ll see only a handful of other characters throughout the game. This leads to a series sense of isolation. Signs of people who are out or even doors that are open are rarely a good sign. You can communicate with many of the building’s residents through screens on their doors, getting leads, but those who are smart keep their doors closed. The Krakow of Observer is a cyberpunk-inspired future, but you mostly see the dregs of it. The building you’re in is for the poor and is practically falling apart. Bizarre Switch NSP

The few characters you see have implants, but these aren’t cool-looking tech. Instead, they’re borderline grotesque, showing a future where people are willing to give up their health and their bodies for barely working implants that give them any edge in life. Observer drips with atmosphere. The PS5 upgrade is stunning, with fantastic lighting and shadows dancing on every wall. 3D Audio makes you feel every creak. The game makes fantastic use of the DualSense, with so much feeling in its movement. I loved the use of the speaker, often catching me off guard. There are definitely jump scares throughout the game, but they’re just present enough to leave you with dread the rest of the time. Even the choice to force you to actually push or pull doors to open them adds a whole new level of fear about what might be behind them.

You play as Daniel Lazarski, an elite neural detective known as an Observer. They are a specialized, corporate-funded police unit who are able to hack into the minds of suspects in order to obtain any information they need. When Daniel receives a distress call from his estranged son, Adam, he traces the call to a tenement building and goes there in the hopes of finding him. What awaits him there is a horror that will test his very sanity a tough game to classify into a specific genre. Much of it could be considered a walking sim, but there are lots of puzzles and investigative elements to it as well. Not to mention that the events take place all in one building, which allows for a lot of free exploration. Honestly, that’s one of my favorites aspects to this game. While it is largely a walking sim, it doesn’t make the mistakes of most others. You know what I’m talking about.

The tired tropes of linear progression with the whole “walk into a room, leave, then walk back in only now it’s different” gimmick. While there are those moments in here, they take place only when Daniel is inside someone’s mind and therefore feel a bit more earned which I found to be a little disappointing. Mainly because the rest of the game delivers a constant feeling of unease and some effective tension-filled sections. Some of them worked and made sense, but having a pigeon fly at your face for no reason at random times was unnecessary. Luckily, there are only a few times these jumpscares pop up, but the game would’ve stronger without them. That being said, I was amazed at how engaging the story was. Not just the main story either.
