Though it can be infuriating at times, the genius of the Oddworld series is in the moments just after I or my followers have been met with an entirely avoidable death and I can’t help but facepalm and laugh before trying again. Your lemming-like followers will thoughtlessly dive straight into deadly obstacles, take way too long to walk through an area that requires precise timing to survive, and do practically nothing to defend themselves when attacked. But as I moved forward, I learned these moments are few and far between, and the rest is mostly just rummaging through bins and lockers, throwing smoke bombs, and hoping the Slig that’s just stopped hasn’t glitched in place. For every sliver of satisfaction found in Soulstorm, from managing to get every Mudokon in an area to a portal or working out the exact timing for a gauntlet of enemies, there are hours of working around unpredictable AI and watching meaningless rewards pile up. Moving around the levels as Abe feels better. It was a bit of a pain when you tried to jump up or climb down, only to fall into the path of a gun-toting Slig. The controller feels more responsive, giving you better control of Abe. There’s not a massive change in the visuals, but I didn’t notice any glitches unlike previously. It generally feels like the best version of itself, and despite it being the same game, there is some new content for those who want something a little extra. Return to the lab On Xbox, players get to experience Vykkers Labs. Those who’ve played Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee will be familiar with the evil laboratories that cruelly tested dodgy pharmaceuticals on Fuzzles. In Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition, players must make their way through challenging levels by avoiding complex traps and difficult scenarios. From level 1 onwards, Vykkers Labs is difficult. If you’re up for it and have a tolerance to high difficulty, this is for you. Personally, I wasn’t the biggest of fans.

Each level finds a new way to imperil the lives of you and your followers in a devious test of your cleverness, creativity, and patience.

It’s a shame that the PlayStation content isn’t included on both versions as I’d much rather see what happens to Toby the train driver in Toby’s Escape. Soulstorm would be a tough recommendation for anyone outside of diehard fans if it performed flawlessly, but I encountered several progress-sabotaging bugs (even after installing the big day-one patch) that should scare off even those players. When I died, Mudokens sometimes failed to respawn alongside me even though my tally indicated they were still alive and under my command. That meant I lost out on turning in followers that I’d spent ages trying to safely liberate, which negatively affected my overall quarma – a vital metric in determining which of the four endings you get.

Abe occasionally gets stuck in environmental geometry, forcing a restart. At one point, I fell into an infinite loop. One escape portal permanently vanished once I reached it, forcing me to abandon followers. A gun in a late-game turret sequence failed to shoot despite working fine in previous segments. After multiple restarts, I randomly discovered that clicking the right stick “fixed” the weapon for some reason, allowing it to fire. I spent over an hour trying to lead a large group of followers through a particularly challenging area, but once I opened the exit door an invisible wall prevented me from moving forward.
