It’s a third-person driving/flying/shooting game with super smooth forward scrolling and a whole bunch of targets to shoot at. And the gameplay options are plentiful, with both USB mouse and JoyCon gyroscopic support. (You can use the good ol’ fashioned manual aiming as well.) I prefer Wolf over Thunderbolt, but they’re both a great time. Finally, Space Gun shamelessly carries over the Alien theme as you visit a corrupted space facility. You shoot aliens and save hostages, while saving secondary ammo types for serious situations. It’s a short but sweet little game, and an awesome gem worth rediscovery. However, I do admit I miss the quirky design of the original arcade unit. It was soooo skinny.

Despite the calibration being very easily knocked out of whack, you can also recentre your aim on the fly with a single button press. Of course you can also use a cursor and control these with the Joy-Con sticks, or even (if you happen to have a Nintendo Switch 2) use mouse control in a similar way. All four games are excellent, if short, arcade experiences. It’s also the case that they feel really cheap in terms of their often unfair difficulty; naturally, this was a deliberate design choice to ensure players kept pumping more coins into the machine to continue playing.

Rather than featuring traditional lightgun mechanics, this novelty is a high-speed 3D shooter that’s closer to Space Harrier than the Operation Wolf formula, which might surprise purists, but the rush of piloting the little hover craft while blasting enemies feels explosive and unmistakably arcade. Night Striker is the game here that pushes beyond pure nostalgia, offering an experience that many players may not have encountered before. The ports themselves are nicely crafted. Glow of 1980s arcade monitors, while save/load states make it possible to pick up anywhere without sacrificing the challenge. These are the kind of quality-of-life tweaks that can make notoriously hard games, games made for the arcades, easier on modern consoles. Control options on Switch are particularly impressive. Joy-Con motion controls emulate the lightgun experience of old, with surprising precision, while mouse and cursor support offer accuracy. It’s a thoughtful approach that balances authenticity with convenience, but I love some of the randomness that comes from using Joy-Con like lightguns.

Multiple arcade versions of each game let players explore different iterations, and the inclusion of Zuntata’s iconic soundtracks ensures that the energy and tension remain intact. From the hostage rescues in Operation Wolf to the cosmic oddities of Space Gun, the audio-visual presentation is a highlight on its own. Across these games, the Switch controls are a very good substitute for the arcade guns, unlike the House of the Dead revisit, giving a crisp sense of control amid the mayhem.
