A lush, sprawling world, dozens of enemies, gear, loot, magic, and just enough of a survival element to keep things interesting. It’s not that Outward Definitive Edition is bad – in fact parts of it are very good – it’s just that it suffers from a pretty bad case of jank in places. Your protagonist is an amateur adventurer whose last voyage went sour. Waking on a beach with no possessions, you learn that your ship sank and most of your party is dead. When you return to town, you’re blamed for the whole thing and told you have 5 days to pay off First off, there’s the DLC. The original game had quite an impressive tail of post launch support, though I never played myself.

Devise diverse strategies to defeat your foes and don’t neglect your basic needs, sharing your journey with a friend, locally or online.

I’m glad I didn’t though, because Outward Definitive Edition takes all that DLC and organically merges it into the base game. The intention was for a new player to not even realize they’re playing something different, and it’s mission accomplished. Not only that, but feedback players had about the DLC has been taken into account. So content and mechanics have been tweaked and reworked in response as well. A basic summary of what Outward is is to say that the title simply puts the player and their character in a “go out, explore, survive and win” situation. Hit the road and see what you can discover while staying alive amid the adversities encountered in the world. The game is a classic third-person action RPG, with great survival touches and an immense universe to explore, with dozens of guaranteed hours of fun. The highlights of the title are exactly those already mentioned in the previous sentence, being an immersive game with lots of information to follow be it status and equipment or missions and secondary characters.

With the new City Building mechanic, you are part of rebuilding the Refugee Camp into New Sirocco.

Outward is a third-person adventure that blends several action-RPG and survival systems together to offer a smorgasbord of gameplay mechanics and role-playing experiences. There are hunger, thirst, fatigue and warmth systems to tend to, melee, magic and ranged combat to learn, hordes of loot to scavenge, and crafting and skill systems to gradually upgrade through vendors. Food spoils and equipment deteriorates, you can’t fast travel everywhere, and there’s no waypoints to guide you. Such complexity is initially overwhelming and even a little clunky, but the ambition is alluring. The story, in contrast, is a grounded and inglorious premise compared to the ‘epic’ approach of other fantasy RPGs; after a barebones character creator, you (and a friend, if you have one handy) start as a humble commoner living in a small village, with a family debt that goes back generations. You apparently survived an expensive sea voyage, and the town gives you 5 days to pay the costs for failure and the loss of the other sailors. Eventually choose from three faction-based questlines as you see fit, with multiple outcomes and dialogue to accommodate your choices and/or failures, and a surprising amount of variation on offer. For instance, Cierzo (the opening village) can be saved or entirely destroyed depending on whether you fail a certain quest, while your pathway through the main story is unique depending on which faction you choose – the Holy Mission of Elatt (to be free of family debts), the Blue Chamber Collective (to begin a new debt-free bloodline), or the Heroic Kingdom of Levant (to be free of past ties entirely)

Many quests have timers, adding a sense of constant urgency (and curiosity) as to how things resolve depending on your choices, and whether you fail or succeed (or, in my case, choose the wrong dialogue!)In contrast, Outward has never shown itself to be a great AAA project and much of this is due to the technical aspect presented, mainly in the visually unremarkable and disturbing fluctuations in performance, both on PS4 and PC.
