I recommend bypassing both of the lowest forms of difficulty, and going straight into the hardest setting. Both “easy” and “normal” mode were excruciatingly slow for my liking, and so I jumped to what the hardest available levels were. Even those started off fairly slow, but ramped up in difficulty at a great pace. Each difficulty mode has just under 30 levels to play. However, I found each to offer the same experience, even with the limited new enemies that were introduced. That said, the rounds are pretty quick. I was easily able to get through the first four levels in under 15 minutes.

This defense game is easily played in either docked or handheld mode, however the touch screen makes for more efficient takedowns in the hardest challenges because the cursor controlled by the controller is fairly slow. The gameplay is relatively simple. Soldiers come from the right side of the screen and you have to hit them with your cannon before they reach the left edge of the screen. The player doesn’t just fire projectiles, but has to charge each shot, which leads to a large explosion that sends several enemies in the area to the afterlife. As well as a particularly powerful rocket, complete the arsenal, but the battles are still quite challenging. Initially in groups, the units are distributed over the course of the campaign, which is relatively short with just 28 missions. There are three difficulty levels in total, but there are no optional missions or real variety. Since the gameplay itself offers no variety, completing the missions becomes a monotonous affair before you’ve even reached halfway through. Of course, the battlefields change, but never enough to require the player to rethink their tactics.

There is a survival mode, but of course it offers no surprises and will only captivate those who want to see how long they can hold off the troops. Even those who are entertained by the simple game concept will be annoyed by the sloppy implementation. Everything is fine if you use the Nintendo Switch touchscreen. Then you can move the cursor across the screen at lightning speed, activate power-ups and keep even tricky situations well under control. Things are different if you prefer buttons and the stick. In the later levels it is almost impossible to hit all the enemies because the player can never be fast enough to get to the right place in time. This is frustrating and underlines that the touchscreen is the true method of experiencing the game. On top of shooting at the waves of enemies, you’ll also need to use the power-ups and items to your advantage. For example, one item will slow everything down, while another will let you shoot a bunch of missiles in a row without charging up. But here’s the catch, these powers will blow up if you drop a missile nearby.

Up the attack and picking up items. You can’t do both at the same time. I’m not what you would call a big tower defense fan, so I was happy to see that Paper Wars plays out more like Missile Command than Kingdom Rush. You aren’t spending money to set down gun turrets or corralling the enemies into a certain path, because the real emphasis here is shooting bad guys and picking up items. It’s the simplicity that is both its strength and weakness.  On one hand, I’m glad that Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder is more of a shoot ’em up than a tower defense game, since it never gets bogged down by buying defenses.

Don’t get me wrong, the action is fun and can get intense in the higher difficulties, but there isn’t enough to the gameplay to keep this from becoming repetitive and boring. I don’t know if the game needs more power-ups, a wide variety of mission types or all of the above, but there’s clearly something missing. This is not however a 1:1 remake of the original game, hence the new subtitle. The original charming paper graphics have been all remade so at least the new soldiers do look better than in the original while still retaining their pleasing children drawing aesthetics.
