A press of Y sees us fling from what ever surface we are on to the opposite side. Along the way, various extra platforms or islands require navigating in our bid to chase players down. While some of the simpler stages are easy enough to handle, when the edges of the screen allow you to pass through them, coming out the other side, or uneven planes see us flinging off in the wrong direction. The already hectic action becomes quite hard to keep on top of. I’d be pretty fascinated to see a bout between 4 skilled players down the line, but for now I think the gravity aspect may end up putting more people off than pulling them in. Again though, I had a good time with Paperbound Brawlers for the most part. The single player campaign, though brief, encompasses the full range of modes and has 4 difficulties, allowing you to really test your resolve or simply breeze through should you wish. It can also be played with up to 4 players.
Using a gamepad is highly recommended in this local-multiplayer party game.
Though I was only able to test 2 player co-op which altered the campaign to include more co-op fights rather than one on one matches. Throughout, we jump from one themed book to another, with several stages in each needing clearing before moving on. The visuals are all presented as hand drawn artwork, doodles come to life as it were, with some nicely drawn designs unlocked as you play can be overwhelming at first, especially since the combat is so rapid and one hit from anything causes you to die, respawning after a few seconds. But it becomes easier once you learn to embrace the chaos. NHRA Championship Drag Racing: Speed for All: Ultimate Edition Switch NSP

Well, and learn the multiple controls; there were many times I meant to invert gravity, only to throw a goo bomb…that landed on myself. Oops. I can’t speak highly enough for how ingenious the level design is: Some levels are simple rectangular circuits. Some have platforms in the middle. Some have objects that rotate, meaning even knowing which way you’re going to face when you land is in question. And in my favorite level so far, only the objects in the middle of the screen are solid; if you invert yourself off the edge you appear on the opposite side of the screen, Asteroids-style.
Each character has his or her own personality. Some are aggressive, some are more cautious.
There’s a multitude of objectives as well. The basic “Versus” style means you try to kill your opponents more times than they kill you, then escape before they can close the exit. In another, the first player to score a kill becomes a glowing “king” who must then avoid being killed for as long as possible in order to accumulate points. “Capture the Quill” challenges you to steal a feather pen from your opponents’ “base” and return it to your base. The trick is you can’t score any points if your quill has been stolen, too. In “Gravity Ball” you score by catching and moving the ball into your opponent’s goal. Next of Kin Switch NSP

The twist is the ball isn’t affected by gravity; if you drop it (by being killed), it doesn’t “fall.” The most challenging one (so far) is “Gatekeeper,” where you have to prevent waves of enemies from reaching multiple exit points that appear. What is it that makes things so difficult to grasp then? Well, Paperbound Brawlers in a single screen 2D brawler – and a pretty competent one at that. The combat is fast and fluid, decked out with little details such as being able to parry attacks should you time things right, and single use projectiles that close the gap on particularly evasive players.
The bots are great for solo players, for when you want to even out the teams, or for when you simply want some extra chaos.
So simple in fact that some might dismiss it as too easy. The controls are as follows: two attack buttons, a jump button, an object throw with two different objects to throw and a gravity manipulator button. Players run around each level slashing each other till there is only one standing. There are no six button press combos, no guard breaks, and no super moves. Just you and your slasher, throwing scissors and an ink bomb. With such simple moves anyone can pick up and quickly get into a game. With such easy controls some may think that there is no complexity to fighting and winning matches.

Well that is wrong because… On some of the simpler stage layouts, things get frantic as up to 4 human or AI players battle it out in one of several game modes. Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and King of the Hill are all present and correct, as well as a mode that feels a little like Rocket League for brawlers; tasked as you are with fighting off players as you attempted to fling the ball in to the opposite teams goal. With only 2 players per team, I did find the soccer mode a little hard to compete in at times, though harder AI or more skilled players definitely aid us in this. Nexomon: Extinction Switch NSP
