A Short Hike sees you controlling Claire, a blackbird who is staying with her aunt May for a few days at a provincial park home to the large Hawk Peak. It is said that the view on top of Hawk Peak is magnificent, but Claire decides to make the short hike to the top hoping to receive reception on her cellphone to answer a call she’s waiting for. On your way there you meet a cast of delightful and quirky characters that present you with requests, gifts and stories of their own. It’s these fleeting interactions that are at the heart of A Short Hike. Some characters are just enjoying the scenery and provide some context for the sights you visit along the way, while others have their own little arcs that play out as you get to know them better.

Gameplay

The gameplay in A Short Hike is rather simple. As you proceed and explore the park, you collect golden feathers that allow you to increase your movement. Each golden feather gives Claire an additional jump and also increases the duration of climbing and sprinting. At any point after a jump you are also able to glide by holding down the button. This system takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you’ll be gliding from the highest peaks all the way down to the bottom of the island. It is a great feeling, especially after you collect a few golden feathers and are able to perform additional jumps mid-glide to reach even higher places. Windstorm – Ari’s Arrival Switch

The presentation is top-notch. The game uses a visual style that reminded me a lot of the first wave of original DS games, mixed with an aesthetic you might find in Animal Crossing. From the wind blowing through the trees to the waves passing through the water, everything on the island is designed to make you feel right at home. The mountain peaks are inviting you at every corner to climb around and discover all sorts of little secrets. All the while you are accompanied by a lovely soundtrack that embodies the environments you are exploring. From cozy hilltops to frozen peaks, everything in A Short Hike fits like a glove. There is a sense of adventure, but also comfort while you are out there discovering hidden spots and talking to all sorts of creatures on your journey.

A Short Hike has quickly climbed its way near the top of my favorite indie titles list. Even though it’s aptly named – I beat it in 90 minutes – I couldn’t wait to start playing it again. It’s that enjoyable. Wolfenstein II The New Colossus 

The most eye-catching of all the titles shown during the August Indie World Showcase, A Short Hike, piqued my interest with its Animal Crossing: Wild World-style visuals. The allusions to that classic are also evident in the various animal hikers. Indeed, there are multiple little WW nods, too numerous to list, but no less appreciated as a fan. The entire game looks the way rose-colored DS visuals live in my mind. You can even choose between “big and crunchy” or “small and tasty” pixel sizes.

Taking the role of Claire (visiting her aunt), you aim to reach the mountain summit, Hawk Peak, the only locale with cell reception for her expected phone call. The hike isn’t easy, and Claire will need to collect golden feathers to aid in her ascent as she climbs, flys, and jumps. These can be acquired by interacting with other hikers, finding coins to purchase some, or purely exploring beyond the marked trails of the provincial park.

Review

I don’t know when I last played a game that made me feel as happy as A Short Hike does. Everything about it is absolutely perfect, from the characters to the gameplay to the little world it inhabits, and I had a massive grin on my face from beginning to end. I haven’t put serious thought into my year-end ballot for our Game of the Year list, but I’m pretty sure this will be right near the top. Wonder Boy Asha in Monster 

The basis of A Short Hike is right there in its name: you’re playing as Claire, a young bird who’s gone camping with her aunt, who decides to take the eponymous short hike to the top of a mountain. But within that very simple premise, there’s a lot more to do than simply going from Point A to Point B.

The game takes place in a provincial park (that would be the Canadian equivalent of a state park) on an island, and the park is full of people for Claire to talk with and secrets for her to uncover. I didn’t exhaustively explore every nook and cranny of the island, but during my short time with the game, I helped a rabbit find his lucky headband and race a turtle, I found a couple of secret passageways, I helped a frog build a sand castle empire, I had a parkour race with another bird, and I found tonnes of buried treasure.
