As always, we don’t want to reveal too much about the actual story, but with Baldur’s Gate 3, developer Larian delivers not only their strongest work in terms of narrative, but also a more than worthy successor to its predecessors, which are considered milestones. We experience the story in dozens of different ways, as its course depends heavily on our decisions. Besides big surprises and gripping twists, there are also many thrilling moments that will make us laugh, shed a tear, or sit in front of the screen with our mouths open and goosebumps. It’s clear almost from the beginning that this game is something special. It begins (after creating your character, of course) with an unsettling cutscene in which a mind flayer inserts a small tadpole into your eye and you get to watch it burrow up under your eyelid. It doesn’t take long before the game sets you free in the world.

Caught in a conflict between devils, deities, and sinister otherworldly forces, you will determine the fate of the Forgotten Realms together.

Though you’re generally pointed towards trying to remove the tadpole from your head. In typical RPG fashion, there are things to do absolutely everywhere and, as you do more stuff, you gain more abilities that allow you to do even more stuff! This includes the usual things like upgrading your lockpicking or conversational skills, but it also includes a couple of relatively unique things. One of the things about Baldur’s Gate 3 that makes it feel so “next-gen” is the world itself and how you can traverse it. It isn’t just a flat sprawling map, but has a lot of verticality as well, and I found the ability to jump (or fly, or teleport) to be unbelievably useful in a way that gives you the same satisfaction you can find in combat. You can’t do that in other CRPGs and it feels like breaking through a barrier back to the possibilities of a DM-led tabletop RPG session, or like you’re getting away with something you shouldn’t. This is true for the rest of the game as well. That freedom to do things in unexpected and delightful ways, ways that are so unexpected that it takes multiple hours to wrap your head around it properly. It’s a level of interactivity with the world that is so unexpected – even after playing Larian’s previous games to death – that blows my mind. After a few hours you really start to get an idea of how many options are available to you – there are chandeliers and torches hanging from the ceiling that you can shoot down onto an unsuspecting enemy’s head, if there are rafters you may be able to teleport up there for some particularly effective stealth attacks, if you’re strong enough you can pick up an enemy and use them to hit another enemy, or just throw them into a chasm.

Underdark, to the sprawling city of Baldur’s Gate itself, your actions define the adventure, but your choices define your legacy. You will be remembered.

A hyena! It’s incredibly liberating. A big part of this is also how rolls are handled as well. It is Dungeons and Dragons after all, so basically everything you do is controlled by dice rolls. Baldur’s Gate 3 puts them front and centre, showing you the odds before rolling, even allowing you to apply bonuses such as spells like Guidance from that screen and re-roll if you have inspiration. This allows this freedom to apply to conversations, lockpicking, trap disarming, anything you actively choose to make a roll for outside of combat, showing you the odds of success so you can make the best decision you can. Or try to, at least. Then there’s the presentation. An actual generational leap from other RPGs, and I’ve played all of the recent ones. More than that, though, it’s also fully voice acted and motion captured, and the difference is night and day compared to everything else in the genre. I’ve spent untold amounts of hours reading in CRPGs, these games are long, storied, and usually aren’t fully voiced, if at all. Here, every character has at least good voice acting, I’ve literally spoken to cats with a handful of lines in this game that have better or more voice acting than crucial characters in other games. The story in Baldur’s Gate III draws you in as an adventurer in a way two and one didn’t really do for me. You have a threat from the start that can cost you everything in the long run. You never know what’s around every corner and the adventure likes to throw surprises at you. It all starts with a kidnapping and a form of larvae inserted through your eye. This creature belongs to one of the antagonists, a Cthulhu inspired race called Illithids (mindflayers).

Define your legacy, nurture relationships and create enemies, and solve problems your way. No two playthroughs will ever be the same.

Their way of reproducing is to insert their larvae into living host bodies, which over time transforms the body into something grotesque with tentacles. So right from the start you are infected and the clock is ticking to get it out. We jump through dimensions aboard the ship chased by dragons and demons who want to destroy this ship as it appears no one is a fan of the Ithilids. It quickly becomes clear that you must escape and find a way to remove the parasite. You don’t stay alone for long and start finding others, even those you met on board the ship. The story itself is not only about your troubles but how the dilemmas and concerns of the world get in the way. Often I’ve noticed that many missions are related to your search for a cure without always being directly connected to it. I can’t really put my finger on the size, but it’s been many years since I’ve run through something so extensive.

My advice is not to save and load when things go bad, but to let the mistakes shape your journey in the same way as the wins. The massive amount of missions wrapped up with the main quest takes everything into consideration and creates a very unique journey for your character that way. I admire the developers for allowing failure to also exist and shape your character’s journey in a natural way. It makes for more believable characters. a blend of exploration, party management, strategic combat, and dialogue options. For now, let’s focus on that latter aspect. The game world is filled with dastardly villains, superstitious folk, backstabbers, kind-hearted individuals, and even some comic relief chums.
