Much like Getting Over It (the PC-based hit that did the rounds on Twitch for a while, inducing rage with its physics-driven ‘man climbing a mountain while a sledgehammer’ premise), Guts and Glory is all about seeking that satisfying sweet spot between avoiding obstacles, staying on your vehicle and pulling off a leaderboard-topping time. You’ll almost certainly mess up, and almost certainly turn the air seven shades of blue, but you’ll still be having a laugh in between all those involuntary swears. It’s pretty horrific when it comes to the airborne levels upon a jetpack-powered wheelchair – issues with manoeuvring the camera and just simply having a general lack of control over any aspect of these levels was pretty exasperating. But the unnecessary over-difficulty of the controls is just one of the issues surrounding this version of the game. The frame rate is pretty poor, and the loading times are far too excessive for a game which is so heavily reliant on restarts due to failure. Also to this version’s detriment is the missing map editor mode found on other systems – you can only play the existing tracks, which of course reduces the amount of playtime that you can get out of the game.

So all things considered, scoring Guts and Glory is a tough task. It certainly feels like it’s doing something new in comparison with the swathes of eShop, but at the same time it feels a jagged experience which is rougher around the edges than the developers intended. More smooth controls would have earned a higher score. Get from point A to point B, it’s that simple. The hard part is staying alive, as a wide assortment of mines, buzzsaws, ball cannons, and all sorts of devious contraptions meant to brutally murder you are in the way. The entertainment value is coming up with new and innovative ways to get chopped, impaled, or exploded. Or it would be if the frames per second didn’t hit single digits, or in many cases completely skip. In one particular instance, a chain reaction of detonating mines resulted in a stutter so bad that my character went from enjoying a leisurely bike ride down a hill to lying on the ground with my intestines hanging out, with only a few frozen frames in between. If getting sliced in half or impaled by a buzzsaw is a can’t miss experience, I would recommend looking at another platform to play it on.
