The short, snappy levels are perfectly pitched for that one more go feel, with a restart almost instantly putting you back in to try again. One shorter stage had me rinsing and repeating the same (failing) strategy for over 5 minutes, before I decided a break was in order to gather my composure. Some stages task you not just with survival but also to collect a small number of tokens that will randomly appear. I enjoyed these levels less, mainly due to the random nature of the spawns.

Sometimes it is just about surviving for thirty seconds, but there are also objective types that require you to collect a certain number of ‘tokens’ without being hit, or objectives that work like a King of the Hill mode in shooters where you’ll need to stay in designated areas until a bar fills up. These additional objectives aren’t the only element to add variety to Hyperdot’s gameplay. Certain levels also feature additional multipliers like darkness, which gives you limited vision, or ice which affects the way you move. The size of your titular hyperdot, as well as its speed, also varies from level to level.

Triangles follow you around for a while like a homing device. Squares simply move in straight lines and pentagons move in straight lines toward you. The squares are mainly used to create blockades and restrict movement, and will never change. They add a certain level of predictability that is nicely balanced with the more dynamic triangles that’ll change each run through a level it is built with very modern sensibilities. Players will control a single dot each with their analog stick, closed off in a circular arena and dodging a number of different moving obstacles and enemies (represented by other geometric shapes) that come their way. In the single-player campaign, missions provide a variety of challenges.

Keep your dot alive in a set amount of time, or gather a certain number of tokens, or fill up a meter by occupying a particular area in the field. Enemies include squares that travel in a straight line, hexagons that aim for the player, triangles that home in on players, stars that start and stop, and plus signs that shoot off their own bullets. Needless to say, the farther I got through the 100+ trials in the campaign, the more hectic and dense the arena got. When adding other players in the mix (up to four in total), it becomes more of a cutthroat battle for survival, with the last dot standing being the victor.

Modifiers from the campaign trials can also be applied in multiplayer, like a slippery ice arena, or shields that allow dots to take multiple hits—with the latter, some multiplayer matches become a game of bumper cars. Rounds are short with little waiting time in between, and HyperDot has an excellent menu and interface that allows players to drop in and drop out matches at any time. I truly enjoyed my time playing through the 105 level campaign which obviously will vary in length depending on how many times you die along the way.
