Playing as a faceless, nameless, and voiceless guardian angel of sorts, you use a magic wand to guide a diminutive princess as she climbs the mystical Tower of Bellbatis to commune with the gods. With its colorful, Crossy Road-like visuals, wonderful background music, and platforming gameplay that’s trickier than it looks, Light Tracer had all the ingredients for a smash hit. Armed with a Sailor Moon-style wand and the ability to manipulate platforms and gadgets, the goal of each level is to guide the princess to a portal at the top of each structure. Holding down the trigger of your wand hand emits a bright, pinpoint yellow light. When pointed to any area of the ground below you, the princess will move to the spot. This method of control is useful in positioning the young woman to conquer obstacles including, but not limited to, pitfalls, moving platforms, environmental hazards, and crazed monkey statues throwing boulders down your path. Using your other hand, you’ll manipulate platforms to go up and down or left and right, taking her further up the tower or towards special areas to collect a stash of coins (with which to purchase cute costumes).

If you like your games’ titles to be entirely on the nose then you’ll love Light Tracer. You play as a god-like being who guides a princess up a magical tower by, wait for it, tracing a path with light for her to follow. It doesn’t get much more literal than that. The game is broken up into 8 different chapters, each with their own sets of challenges and conclude with a boss battle. Those battles seem to be an interesting addition as it was something wholly unexpected. It’s not that the battles themselves are bad, but the first encounter with one felt out of place. I thought this was a game about leading a princess around a tower? It just didn’t jive with what I had done up to that point or at all again till the next one.

It has been a while since I had fired up my PlayStation VR. In fact, I literally had to blow the dust off it when I launched Light Tracer. It isn’t because I don’t enjoy using Sony’s gaming goggles, but more that there really isn’t that much to get stuck in to. Most titles are experiences more than games, and those that do go all in on VR often feel out of place to me, like they are just trying to force the VR thing into the game, even if it doesn’t properly fit. Light Tracer seems to be trying something different; meshing a well worn game genre and building it from the ground up with VR in mind, and in some ways it does work, but unfortunately it just falls short where it counts. A puzzle platformer at heart, Light Tracer sees you stepping into the gloves of some kind of god, whose job it is to guide a small princess up a very large tower, floor by floor. Each floor provides a new puzzle to conquer, and each is a little bit more devious than the last. The tower is broken up into chapters, with each chapter having its own theme that affects gameplay and a boss to defeat at the end, mixing things up and actually giving the player a good cut off point to take a break. I found this useful, as I find using the VR headset uncomfortable after prolonged periods of play. As such the length of each chapter was ideal for me.

In one hand players hold a staff that emits a beam of light, and it is this staff that is used to lead your character through the world. As the game’s title implies you use this staff by pressing the trigger button to set a path for the princess to follow. The other hand is used to change your view into the level. Pulling in the trigger and moving the Move controller allows you to rotate the stage as well as zoom in or out. It’s useful in finding new perspectives, but can also be rather finicky and it’s sometimes tough to return to a viewpoint you had before. Luckily you can reset the view by pressing the circle button.There are eight chapters in total and each has its own environment type, which in turn determines the traps that lie in wait for the princess. However they’re not tough to get passed and most levels can be beaten within a few minutes. What is really annoying, infuriating actually, are the boss battles found within Light Tracer.
