LISA: The Joyful – Definitive Edition is the soul-twisting conclusion to the quirky side-scrolling RPG series, LISA. You explore Olathe in your quest to punish the world that has treated you wrong. Along the way, you learn about this strange land, your family, and the monsters and men in power. The world’s out to get you… now, get it back. This Definitive Edition brings fresh blood to the game with HD graphics, a 120 FPS mode, updated battle systems, 6 brand new Warlord skills, new border art overlays, new music tracks, an in-game music player (including music from LISA: The First), a Painless (Story) mode, and new secrets to unmask.

As a follow-up to LISA: The Painful, this entry shifts the focus to Buddy, the girl Brad raised, and her brutal journey through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The game is a short, intense experience—roughly two hours—that trades the sprawling party management of the first game for a more focused, combat-heavy revenge tale. If you enjoy narrative-driven RPGs with heavy themes and a distinctive art style, this is one to add to your library.

Gameplay and Story

In LISA: The Joyful, you step into the shoes of Buddy, the girl Brad adopted in LISA: The Painful. After the events of that game, Buddy sets out on a quest for revenge against the warlords who have wronged her. The game is a side-scrolling RPG with turn-based battles inspired by classics like Super Mario RPG. You’ll travel through various zones in Olathe, fight enemies, and uncover the dark history of this world.

One of the standout features is the new Warlord skills. As you defeat each warlord, you gain their signature ability, which you can use in battle. This adds a layer of strategy and progression. The game also introduces a Painless mode for those who prefer to focus on the story without the challenge of combat. The updated battle system refines the original mechanics, making encounters feel more dynamic.

The narrative is intense and deals with mature themes, including abuse, addiction, and revenge. The game doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable moments, and that’s part of its impact. The new border art overlays change with each location, giving each area a distinct visual identity even within the 4:3 frame. The in-game music player lets you enjoy the soundtrack, including tracks from LISA: The First, at your leisure.
