The real question that drove me to this review was, does Lunar: The Silver Star and its sequel Lunar 2: Eternal Blue hold up to today’s retro-styled RPG standards? In the process of answering this question, I found a pleasant, nostalgic surprise that shows how far ahead of its time Lunar really was are pretty boiler plate turn-based RPGs. They involve a hero’s unexpected journey to stop a world threatening evil, all while amassing a lovable rag tag group of allies.These kinds of games live and die by the level of personality they display, but luckily that’s where the series stands out most.

Follows Hiro and his friends as they set out in search of the Goddess Althena alongside an enigmatic girl named Lucia.

Outlandish Kyle and boisterous Nash from the first game are as charismatic as Lemina and Jean of the second game. These characters all play well with our protagonists Alex and Hiro, who are the pure-of-heart, hopeful, heroes-of-lore archetype in their respective games. Everyone in the main and supporting cast make for engrossing personalities; fortunately, the villains are equally as magnetic. Adding to the mix is a wild localization from a team that originally chose to include ‘90s American pop culture references such as Austin Powers jokes into a Japanese game. It’s a community fan favorite. When going back and playing these older games, it’s good to keep in mind the time period they are from. With this being a remaster and not a remake, a lot of the elements from the original release make a return, for better or worse. However, some of those quality of life additions really help make it more playable, and there are a few I am so happy about.

I ended up relying on auto battles the more I played, and having this option to more closely define how my allies conduct themselves was a great addition. This collection brings the enhanced PS1 versions to Switch beautifully, complete with touched-up visuals, brand new voice acting, a new script, and a handful of quality-of-life changes. And all of those tweaks aim to keep that Saturday Morning Cartoon™ feel that the games are so distinctly cherished for intact. This ends up being a bit of a mixed bag. The original voice acting is what it is – OTT ‘90s anime dub-style that is hard not to smile at. The replacements here attempt to match the tone and lip flaps with varying degrees of success.
