Sand Land, the open-world adaptation of the titular manga by the late, great Akira Toriyama, is a prime example of such a case. In many respects, it’s wonderful to see the world of Sand Land at this scale with some of its original charm coming through at key moments, and its emphasis on vehicles for exploration and combat gives it a unique gameplay focus. From storytelling to quest design – left me feeling rather underwhelmed isn’t necessarily a deep examination of the human condition, nor is it intended to be, but its premise of demons and humans coexisting in an arid wasteland fighting comically corrupt governments makes for an immediate hook. The struggle for resources, particularly water, unravels to become more about building a resistance, making amends for grave mistakes from the past, and the lengths its villains will go to cling onto power and control. You control the childish fiend prince Beelzebub, whose soft side always wins out regardless of how often he proclaims to be the scariest, most evil demon around.

Build up your base of operations into a thriving city, with the help of the people you meet along the way in this desert.

He’s consistently endearing and brings characters together like the shamed veteran Rao and genius mechanic Ann for a fun group that unpacks their dark histories throughout the journey. In the roughly 20 hours of gameplay leading up to the credits, we had a lot of fun with the quirky and humorous characters, who, much like Goku and Co. from Dragon Ball, all have their hearts in the right place and always a witty remark on their lips. While the story does have its slow moments, and when Sheef repeatedly asks what a female cactus is called (by the way, it’s called Kaktussi – ugh, the German translation!), a bit more variety certainly wouldn’t have hurt. Even more exciting, featuring new characters, plot twists, and a fresh area. Since trekking through the vast, enemy-infested desert on foot would be far too dangerous in the long run, in Sand Land we can hop into tanks, armed hovercrafts, nimble speed bikes, or combat mechs. Many of these diverse vehicles are unlocked as we progress through the story, while others require completing optional side missions. Blasting dinosaurs with rockets or unleashing machine-gun fire on enemy soldiers is precise and fun in third-person view. However, the rather monotonous battles become repetitive over time, partly due to a lack of enemy variety and partly due to a limited arsenal of weapons.

The end is only the beginning, as beyond this arid ground lies a mysterious new realm to explore – Forest Land.

The boss fights, on the other hand, are a welcome highlight, especially towards the end of the game, where they are very well-staged and require a bit more skill in handling your vehicle has managed to stay true to its roots on all fronts, something I admire. Obviously, the manga is the source material, so staying true isn’t an issue. I feel like the anime has taken the most liberty with the material, there are only 13 chapters to the story, and over the course of 11 episodes, about half hour each, I can see why there would be some added content to the anime. Especially further into the game, but I was surprised by how true to form it stayed. I also enjoyed how the developer was able to make it feel like it came right from the manga or even anime. The style in all three is a little different, the anime feels more modern in its looks and feel, but still gives off some nostalgia vibes- I think that’s just Akira Toriyama’s style being so prevalent when I was young. Sand Land, on my PS5, looks like a split between the more modern anime look and the old-school manga that was released in 2000. Wow, we’re saying 2000 was a while ago takes place years and years after a natural disaster and war have taken this land and turned it into, well, sand. It’s a desert in every direction. Water has become the most sought-after resource by both humans and demons.

A nostalgic and heartwarming world created by Akira Toriyama, where you will become the main character, Beelzebub.

Rao, a human sheriff in a nearby town has sought out the demon enclave, looking for partners in an attempt to find a rumored fresh spring of water. The tyrannical king has a monopoly on the current water supply, forcing the demons to take up arms in a gorilla warfare style of hit-and-runs on water transporters. The young demon Beelzebub and his old, Santa-looking demon friend Theif join Rao in the search. Hijinks ensue. Okay, a lot of talk about Sand Land as a franchise. What kind of game is Sand Land? Well, that one is a little complicated too. Sand Land fits the mold of several genres. It is action-RPG. You mainly play as the demon Beelzebub. You take on monsters roaming Sand Land, leveling up as you do.

Usually, as Thief, you need to sneak your way around a village for supplies, or as Beelzebub sneaking into a military base to steal a vehicle. While Sand Land has three different difficulty modes, I found myself playing on the easiest and still struggling at times with the stealth parts of Sand Land. I’m not sure if my struggle was me just not understanding how to get sneaky, or it was just that challenging to make it through without being caught. With the exception of the first tutorial sneak mission I was caught at least once every time. Thankfully, I was snot punished for frequently being seen. Instead, you are taken back sometimes a few seconds before you were caught, other times it’s about a minute earlier. Destruction AllStars PS5
