Not satisfied with being a simple visual novel or even one single spin on the concept, Shuten Order claims to be five whole adventure games in one, introducing entirely different genres of gameplay to each of the game’s five routes. A simple visual novel that occasionally dips into poorly thought out and underdeveloped copies of some other game that’s much more worth your time. Before you choose which route you start with, Shuten Order opens with a prologue to set up the basics of the story. You play as Rei Shimobe, an amnesiac who wakes up to discover that she has recently been murdered. Two angels appear and tell her that she has received the unique opportunity to return to life by completing God’s Trial. She has three days to make her murderer confess and subsequently kill them in order to reclaim her soul and return to life.

There’s no time to investigate them all. Choices must be made, and the pursuit of truth demands sacrifice.

The five suspects are the ministers of the mysterious Shuten Order, and each route has Rei follow one of them in order to catch her killer. With just a few days on the clock before your resurrection ‘expires’, you’re tasked with completing ‘God’s Trial’: identify your murderer, get them to confess, and then, well… kill them. The potential suspects are limited to just five individuals: Shuten Order’s ministers, each of whom presides over a specific department. I started with the Ministry of Security, which essentially sees you working to solve the mystery of a deadly entity called ‘Nephilim’, a grotesque creature that stalks its prey and gouges their eyes out. Lovely stuff. The Security path sees you navigate a series of labyrinths set in different locations as you progress through the story. It’s mostly a case of finding an item or activating a switch and then making it to a final destination without being caught by Nephilim, who constantly shuffles along the corridors. It’s shallow stuff with some pretty basic 3D visuals, and on its own doesn’t really hold up all that well.

The resurrection is incomplete—their memories are gone, and their life limited to a mere four days.

The body is identified as the founder of both the country and the religious organization that governs the land: the Shuten Order. All the while the citizens of the Order welcome the year by wishing each other a “Happy New End.” Celebratory counters displayed across various public spaces tick down, displaying “168 remaining until the end of the world…”, the end of humanity. Afterwards, protagonist Rei Shimobe awakens without her memories in an unfamiliar hotel. The catch is that the resurrection hasn’t been completed, with the amnesiac only having four days and a temporary body to fully resurrect and regain her memories. To achieve this, Rei must succeed in “God’s trial”, using the allotted four days to force a confession from her killer, resulting in the murderer’s death. With that, I can only speak on what little I played in hopes of a fix for whatever caused this issue on my setups in the near future, so that I can give it a fair go. I do want to, as I found Shuten Order very appealing whenever everything came together. Though plenty of the style, themes, and art will surely feel familiar to those following Kazutaka Kodaka’s previous works.

The faster pace makes for an interesting, intense experience where each of the many revelations hits the protagonist Rei Shimobe like a truck. These range from religious epiphanies or godly challenges to simple human stories. Which means that quite quickly you get the option to have Rei investigate one of five routes, each exploring its own different mystery game sub-genre that you’re locked into until the short scenario is cleared. It’s an ambitious idea, and at times wonderfully creative, but one that results – as you’d expect – in a somewhat splintered experience.

While for genre sickos like myself it’s an interesting approach, it’s hard to recommend for newcomers, which can feel oddly contrary to how simplistic each route can feel. Rei will go forward to confront her potential murderers with a solid case of amnesia, two fairweather angels at her side and an inexplicable connection with God. These elements are constants throughout the game, so get used to them. The amnesia will gradually depart as you find trigger moments to bring back spotty snapshots of her previous life, and it unveils itself differently depending on how you approach the investigation into your death.
