SpellKeeper Switch NSP Free Download Romslab I really wanted to like Spellkeeper. From an audiovisual standpoint, it’s very charming – the gameplay can be relaxing and there’s little pressure involved in completing the puzzles, which allows you to keep trying until you’ve found a solution. Unfortunately – and this may be a problem that’s unique to me and the way my mind works – logic puzzles tend to frustrate and annoy me (Picross is another type of logic puzzle that I just can’t seem to get my head around, for example). If, however, you’re looking for a reasonably priced, visually pleasing and relaxed puzzle game, I’m sure you could do a lot worse than Spellkeeper. ROMSLAB

Called “spells” on a grid that guide a source light to crystal cocoons that open up into butterflies.  The old “reflect the light” mechanic has been done a zillion times before, most memorably in Zelda: Wind Waker. Hey, the classics are classics for a reason: they work. And SpellKeeper works and is pretty fun. But having played tons grid puzzlers, I’ve come to the conclusion that they’re the simplest of all logic-based brain-benders. Once you get a feel for reverse-engineering the levels, you should be able to breeze through most stages with minimum resistance. Often you can do this just by even the simplest of monkeying-around with the various tiles you have until the final move becomes self-evident.

I used this to solve 80% of the puzzles I finished in SpellKeeper in under a minute. Your mileage may vary, but as far as puzzle games go, this one was one of the easier ones I’ve dealt with. But hey, it is genuinely well done, fun, and who doesn’t like butterflies? I mean, I don’t. They’re glorified moths we’ve decided are less gross or annoying because their wings are pretty. Ladybugs get away with this too. Spiders could really learn a lesson from them. If they’d just put on a little makeup they’d be on the receiving end of significantly less rolled-up newspapers. Something nice looking, you know? A red splotch shaped like an hourglass isn’t enough. In fact, that just sort of makes you look like a serial killer. CONSCRIPT Switch NSP

The interface is moderately clunky. You use the control stick to move the cursor, but you have to use the D-pad to point some of the tiles in the direction you want to use them. The left trigger cycles through the tiles you can use. For whatever reason, it never felt natural to me and I was constantly fumbling with it. And there’s a few stages with multiple-outs, which is a personal puzzle pet peeve developers productively pass-over perpetually. Hell, at least twice I finished stages without using all the tiles in my inventory. I like my logic puzzlers tightly designed and having several solutions is the complete opposite of tight (unless the game is based around that, which SpellKeeper isn’t).

It led to situations where know I was beating levels in ways the developer never envisioned. And for some reason, when that happens I always picture developers screaming at me in Boss Hogg’s voice like he’s threatening to get the Dukes. No joke. And now you will too. You’re welcome. As you may infer from the name, the artstyle of SpellKeeper takes on a majestic fantasy tone, complete with colorful sketches of an overworld and title screen that resembles a fairy tale storybook. These act as nice backdrops that are visually interesting without overpowering the gameplay on screen. What are these marks? Well, they come in the form of gem-like cocoons, from which magical butterflies sprout. Suddenly, the oddly basic and ambiguous butterfly thumbnail for the Switch game makes sense. Once you’ve liberated each of the sporadically placed butterflies from their cocoons by aiming the current on each one, it’s mission accomplished, and onto the next of the roughly 60 stages. These stages are lumped into fairly standard Village, Garden, Castle, and Tower biomes. Given SpellKeeper’s relative ease in difficulty, and its lack of content elsewhere, the game can pretty much be completely polished off in just a handful of hours. There is no sort of head-to-head local multiplayer or online content to be found.

You have one job: use magic to turn Cocoons into beautiful Butterflies. The level is completed once all the butterflies are free.

Relative lack of grueling, anxiety-inducing gameplay may be a turn-off. Still, there are plenty of nuances to most of the content that does exist, and a healthy dose of curveballs introduced in each new biome, beckoning you to grind your way to the finish. While the premise of guiding currents of magic sounds simple enough, a number of factors subtly yet effectively add layers of complexity. You’re granted a limited amount of various items which you must strategically place on tiles laid out in a variety of patterns. They’re referred to as “spells”, but they’re essentially specialized arrows or funnels that are placed onto the currents and used to channel them into designated areas.

This ultimately creates a sort of chain-link of magical energy that must find its way to each cocoon. SpellKeeper does a pretty nice job easing you into its unique workings by starting things out with smaller, less intricate layouts, fewer butterflies, and more basic spells. As you progress, you’ll be working with more advanced stage designs, along with more advanced spell types which allow for more coverage and flexibility in redirecting the energy currents dominated by photorealistic graphics and sprawling open worlds, a quiet revolution is taking place.
