The Legend of Heroes: Trails From Zero follows the lead character Lloyd returning to the town of Crossbell after some years to join the local police department. There, they’re among the crew of a tighter-knit but lower-rung coup known as the SSS (Special Support Section). Rounding out the rest of the group is three more characters, each with their own archetypes. Elie is the more formal and educated member of the party and also the granddaughter of Crossbell’s Mayor. Randy is a charming brute that’s a bit thick and (as at least one character in a JRPG so often does) largely spends his time trying to pick up girls. Last but certainly not least is Tio, the character with the most intrigue.
A fantastical journey
She’s a fourteen-year-old soldier with history and skills in tech, coming from her prior work at a mysterious organisation known as The Epstein Foundation (yes, I raised my eyebrows in concern at that too), discussed often only in whispers. You’ll get to know each character and their deal quite well. We witness our hero Lloyd feel like he’s walking in the shadows of his ex-cop brother who passed away some years prior under mysterious circumstances. More or less each of these scenes is an intimate one-on-one moment with accompanying twinkly orchestral music. That’s just the start of the magical musical arrangements present. Y’know, the good stuff in JRPGs. The world of Crossbell is realised incredibly well — something to be expected from the greater Legend of Heroes series but still a feat on its own. It’s separate from the setting of Erebonia found in the Trails of Cold Steel series. Thankfully, (despite some greater deeper implications and nods that I missed as a franchise newbie) this means the world and this story is relatively quite contained. It’s great news for those wanting to get into the IP but daunted about where to start.
Taking the fight cross-country
Before getting into the improvements in this version of the game, Trails from Zero serves as a great entry point into Falcom’s massive Trails series that spans multiple generations of consoles. Until now, the only Trails games on Switch in the West are Trails of Cold Steel III and Trails of Cold Steel IV. The former is a game many people I know played as their first game, and it made them want to experience more of the world. Trails from Zero on Nintendo Switch and PC was ported by PH3. Saying “ported” is an understatement given how much has improved and been added to this conversion over the PS4 version. So far, PH3 has been responsible for PC releases of Trails and Ys games, but for Trails from Zero, the developer tackled the Switch version as well. The PS4 release from Falcom in Japan served as the source of Trails from Zero for PC and Switch. I’ve done a detailed comparison of all platforms which you can read here, and with a patch from a few days ago, the Switch version is very close to the PC release. The comparison below showcases how much of an improvement the visuals are on Switch (with its UI scale option also enabled for a larger interface).
Reviving a cult-classic
Improvements and enhancements here include massive visual upgrades across textures and new interface options. These also include a plethora of quality of life features and added visual options not present on PS4. I have no qualms in calling this the gold standard JRPG port for Switch considering it even improves on visuals compared to PS4 while other JRPG ports have compromises visually like with Dragon Quest XI S. Some of the features have been regulars in PH3’s PC ports, but being able to skip intro logos to save time and boot up your save quickly on Switch really show how much care went into trying to make this the best possible experience it could’ve been for Nintendo Switch owners.

As pictured in the start, the Switch (with its latest update) also has a new “Show BGM Information” option that displays the track name and soundtrack details when a new song plays. Trails from Zero does have a few flaws though. If you got into the series through the Cold Steel games, the visuals are going to take some time to get used to. As someone who played and loved Trails in the Sky, I feel right at home here, but there’s definitely a dated feel to the game visually. The improvements and cleaned up textures help make it a nicer experience, but it is a remaster of a PSP game at its core after all. The other issue is the lack of English voice acting. - First you will need YUZU Emulator. Download it. Open it in WinRar, 7ZIP idk and then move the contents in a folder and open the yuzu.exe.
- There click Emulation -> Configure -> System -> Profile Then press on Add and make a new profile, then close yuzu
- Inside of yuzu click File -> Open yuzu folder. This will open the yuzu configuration folder inside of explorer.
- Create a folder called "keys" and copy the key you got from here and paste it in the folder.
- For settings open yuzu up Emulation -> Configure -> Graphics, Select OpenGL and set it to Vulkan or OpenGL. (Vulkan seems to be a bit bad atm) Then go to Controls and press Single Player and set it to custom
- Then Press Configure and set Player 1 to Pro Controller if you have a controller/keyboard and to Joycons if Joycons. Press Configure and press the exact buttons on your controller After you're done press Okay and continue to the next step.
- Download any ROM you want from Romslab. After you got your File (can be .xci or .nsp) create a folder somewhere on your PC and in that folder create another folder for your game.
- After that double-click into yuzu and select the folder you put your game folder in.
- Lastly double click on the game and enjoy it.
NOTE: Some games may not run in Yuzu emulator, therefore you may use Ryujinx.
