Which is a fun feature even if the results sometimes look a bit strange (purple snow, anyone?). The music is excellent, albeit there aren’t many tracks so you’ll be hearing the same ones a lot. The sound effects are also well done, from the satisfying thunk as you place down a building, to the horn that sounds to rally your troops as you prepare to face the night. You’ll control a character on horseback with a passive attack which fires automatically (a bow, to begin with) and an active attack on a cooldown timer. The game alternates between day time.

When you build up your castle and its defences, and night, when enemies attack. You’ll start with a castle centre around which you’ll build other structures: economic buildings, like houses, mines, and windmills, which grant gold every day as long as they survive the night; army buildings like barracks and archery ranges that add soldiers to your army; and defensive buildings like towers and walls. You can press a button to show ghostly outlines of all the buildings currently available to you, and you can upgrade the castle centre to get more nodes. It often makes sense to throw down a lot of economic buildings early on, when they could potentially give you gold every day for the rest of the match, but this only works if you create enough defences to ensure they survive the night. The game forewarns you what type of enemies you’re about to face and where they will spawn, so you’ll always know where to place your defences (the final waves of each level throw enemies at you from all directions, naturally).

Thronefall comes from the Berlin-based Grizzly Games, who have already convincingly demonstrated with Superflight and Islanders (at the time in collaboration with Coatsink) that they are incredibly talented when it comes to boiling down game ideas to their essence and presenting them in a visually appealing way. This “build by day, defend by night” approach with elements from real-time strategy, tower defense and hack and slay is wonderfully catchy and also very pretty when it relies on three to four well-chosen colors per map. The goal in the basic game mode is always to survive 12 nights. As a miniature king, you ride across the map yourself, placing houses, barracks, towers, castle walls, fields and the like at defined building sites until there are no more coins jingling in your wallet. You do this each time with the knowledge of which direction the enemies will come from at night. The game even tells you which ones they are. Whether it’s foot soldiers, flying creatures, siege machinery – knowledge that you use to prepare yourself within the limits of your account.

It’s going to be a tough night, but nothing beats seeing the sun rise above your little kingdom to live another day.

If you’ve been reading my reviews, you’ll know by now that I’m a big fan of games with wave survival mechanics. I’m particularly fond of city-building games where you have to defend your town against monsters (see Cataclismo or Diplomacy Is Not an Option for recent examples). I’m also not opposed to occasionally indulging in a classic tower defense game. Thronefall, on the surface, is one of these classic tower defense titles; however, it hides a layer of depth below the surface that only gradually reveals itself to you as you play, surprising you more and more as you conquer its handful of levels.

Thronefall opens with a straightforward tutorial that quickly explains the game’s fundamentals. You are given a king and a castle, with a set number of enemy waves to survive. Complete each wave without losing your castle, and you pass the level. Each of the game’s levels is presented as a region on a world map, each featuring a unique layout of placeable structures and its own challenges to overcome. Like most tower defense games, you play a balancing game between defensive structures and economy.
