That is really the bare basics of just how Ravenous Devils works and what you will be doing for the majority of the game. Kill people, turn them into food, sell food to make profit and spend those profits on your business. When I did my preview a while back, I played the game on my laptop. A game like this is perfect for PC playing, what with the fact that you control the game via the use of a lot of clicking and mouse pointing. However, for this review, I played Ravenous Devils on the Xbox. Wanted to see how the controls translated from the relative simplicity of a mouse pointer to the more awkward and frustrating use of a gamepad. I mean, we all know that these mouse-driven games always work best on PCs but perhaps don’t fare so well on consoles. Have to say that the controls actually work really well here.

What Bad Vice Games have done is, they have left it simple. When you have a dozen or so buttons to press on a gamepad, devs often feel the desire to use as many of those buttons as possible when it is not needed. Here, you use the shoulder/trigger buttons to select one of the two characters/a floor of the building, the left stick is used to move the cursor and then you have a button to select items and equipment for use. The right stick moves and zooms the camera but to be honest, I hardly did that once I settled on a comfortable setting. Honestly, I was not expecting the controls to be as fluid as they are, when compared to playing this on PC. But hey, I still need to applaud Bad Vice Games for keeping things simple and very effective when using a gamepad. Outside of all the murder and cannibalism that is going on here, there is a story. Now, this bit isn’t a spoiler as it happens at the start of the game. In fact, it is the entire setup for the plot but… Percival and Hildred receive a letter that says the sender of the letter knows who they are and what they are doing. The mysterious letter is simply signed Mr J. Who is this Mr J and what does he want? Well, who he is remains a mystery until the very end of the game and I’m not about to spoil that here. What he wants, he tells you as much himself. In exchange for his silence and not turning you over to the police, Mr J wants you to kill some very specific people… and cook them up for a special banquet for him to eat.

Meet grotesque characters

Ravenous Devils begin with Hilda and Percival fleeing their home and the city in the dead of night. Suspicions have fallen upon them and they have had to leave. This isn’t the first time they have moved towns in the dead of night. When they arrive at their new home they instantly set up a shop each. Hilda turns the ground floor of the building into a tavern with the basement serving as the kitchen. Whilst Percival converts the upper floor into a tailor’s shop. Upon opening their respective stores they receive a letter from a mysterious sender. Identifying himself only as Mr J. Now before you think that Revenous devils is a run of the mill shop simulator it is extremely different. Apart from the dark, twisted story unfolding around Hilda and Percival. There are also a few unique game mechanics. For a start, you are running two shops at the same time. Percival is in charge of the tailor shop and Hilda is in charge of the kitchen and tavern. Both businesses link together smoothly as Hilda and Percival work together wonderfully as a team. Customers come into Percival’s shop to be measured for a new suit. Instead, Percival stabs them in the throat and stomach with his trusty scissors murdering them instantly. He then proceeds to strip the clothing from their body before dumping it down the trapdoor.

With the clothing removed, Percival then crafts the clothing into new clothes and sells them in his store. Meanwhile, down in the basement, Hilda collects the freshly delivered body, puts it through a mincer and bakes hamburgers or pies to sell in the tavern above. As you progress through Ravenous Devils you will unlock various upgrades. Better tavern facilities to serve more customers, More ovens to meet customer demands. The ability to turn corpses into sausages or steaks. A greenhouse to grow vegetables for the kitchen. (using dead bodies as the fertilizer of course). With most shop simulators the main emphasis is on never having enough time or ingredients to serve every customer. Ravenous Devils does away with that manufactured frantic pace and replaces it with a more measured and manageable approach. Whilst it can feel overwhelming at times running both shops together. If you get yourself into a decent rhythm you can manage both shops together exceedingly well. A nice touch that I appreciated was being able to take as much time as you want to set up the shops each day. Prepare well and your day can run like clockwork. Fail to prepare and you will quickly become overwhelmed. Once you have prepared both shops it is time to open the doors to your paying public.
