Betrayal, and revenge, as you unravel the mysteries of the Sea Shepherd prophecy and face the immortal Captain Blackbone.
Each combat encounter is broken up into two main phases: cannons and cutlasses. During the cannons phase you have three turns to battle your opponent’s cannons and also do other types of damage that will come into play during the hand-to-hand battle ahead. Once that bit is over it’s time to draw cutlasses and have at it. Legends, curses, and ghosts are all part of the game when you go disturbing treasure in deep, dark places. As a member of Captain Blackbone’s crew, Cutter is loyal, almost like the cap’n’s own son, even. But there’s always a treasure too shiny for loyalty, and as you enter the story. Conflict arises around a precious stone, an eye goes missing, and before he knows it, Cutter awakens years later to find the crew again and learn that not only did Blackbone end Cutter’s life, but that the rest of them wound up down in Davy Jones’ locker with him. See, Rogue Waters is a ghost story with an apparition relentlessly pursuing the one who wronged him. The thing is, you’re the ghost in this here tale. So, it makes sense that if you’re in the middle of a run and you die, that’s why you reawaken back at your secluded lair. Though Rogue Waters classifies itself as a roguelike, it’s definitely on the lighter side.
Each run generates new encounters, requiring careful navigation as you work your way toward Captain Blackbone.
You don’t have to run through the entire game without dying. It’s structured much more like a typical RPG in that the story unfolds over a long series of runs as if each is a book chapter. If you meet a watery grave during a run, you don’t return to the starting point, just to the beginning of the chapter. Much like a roguelike, you go through a long series of events, mostly battles, sometimes picking a direction from several options. You can invest in better equipment back at your lair, but most things only last for the current run. Pocket Mini Golf Switch NSP

Once you’ve cast off and chosen one of the three paths offered to you at sea, it’s time to do battle with unsuspecting scum. Each battle begins with your boat sailing alongside the enemy boat and guns blazing. The duel is viewed from above and I find myself liking the way the game has designed its battles, and I dearly wish they were longer and more elaborately animated. Three-masted ships armed with cannons side by side, what more is needed in this life, I wonder? Is it even mutiny? Now it’s time to assemble your own crew and take revenge on the captain.
Use your Pirate Cave (HUB) to equip ship upgrades & crew members before each run.
I’m sure there are more people out there who want to take revenge on their former employer, so this is your chance to do it in a non-punishable way. Despite the ‘rogue’ in the name, Rogue Waters is not a traditional roguelike game. If you die, your turn is over, but you keep the money and other things you’ve collected so you can come back stronger next time. This made it a bit more accessible to me, especially since I don’t often play tactical RPGs, let alone roguelites. If, like me, you are not someone who regularly plays these kinds of games, but Rogue Waters has caught your attention, then you can definitely give the game a chance.

I already mentioned that the game is somewhat forgiving for a roguelike, but you also have many options for setting the difficulty of the game. The rewards you can earn depend on the difficulty you set, so in the long run you also have a good motivation to try to make the adventure a bit more difficult for yourself. In contrast to the tactical RPG I played a while ago, Arco , Rogue Waters gives you a clear, extensive tutorial in the beginning to get to grips with the mechanics of the game. That is quite nice. You navigate on a map that will look familiar to anyone who has played any roguelike game since Slay the Spire. Pocket League Story Switch NSP
