By taking these forms and diving into the hearts of those indulging in sin, Cecil can battle the demons and free the people from their influence. Suspicions that all is not as it seems are raised very early. The game doesn’t make a secret that there is more going on than the player realises, so it isn’t much of a surprise when it turns things on their head with a mid-game twist. It’s still effective and breathes life into the second half of a game that quickly becomes a touch formulaic, but it’s unlikely to catch you by surprise. With the goal of ridding his homeland of Sinwell of the plagues of sin, Cecil is able to get into people’s minds.

Saga of Sins is a 2D action-adventure that will take you into the minds of villagers to fight the seven deadly sins. Transform into one of four demonic creatures that you can swap to at will, each with unique abilities, and fight off the sins that are taking over. Utilize different techniques, like the Power Dash, to get more coins, which you will use to upgrade and enhance your skills, all while discovering a surprising story with twists, turns, and multiple endings. With Sinner and Innocent levels and arcade-style gameplay, this game will keep you on your toes and test you in a multitude of ways.

Certain objects, such as boxes or braziers, can be set on fire with the Gargoyle’s Fire Breath to clear the path, unlock secrets or solve riddles.

Saga of Sins is quite possibly one of my favorite looking games this year (so far). I love unique and stylized ways to showcase games, like Sunday Gold last year, and this game continues that with a stained glass inspired style by Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. On top of that, the voice acting is fantastic. It really elevates the immersion into the time period and story. I also did enjoy the gameplay loop, the arcadey platforming and combat. The game is a lot of fun, and thankfully, it is one you can fully enjoy on the Steam Deck! You explore Sinwell and interact with the citizens to discover which sin they’re afflicted with. Each stage is themed around one of the Seven Deadly Sins, though most of the differences are purely cosmetic. Greed and Envy offer some small changes in how money is earned or lost, but otherwise, there is little difference between the stages. It’s disappointing that each level is so similar. It would have been fun to have seen more unique creatures or more varied mechanics at play to bring the Sins front and centre in the plot. As it is, they feel like window dressing to the story of Cecil and Ulrich rather than a key component.

Fortunately, Saga of Sins is relatively short. There are a total of 31 sinners to save in Sinwell; two levels plus a boss fight for each of the Seven Deadly Sins. The remaining ten levels are Innocents who are free of sin. These stages don’t have any enemies but instead are presented as a puzzle to be solved for more coins. Completing all of these levels will take you around 10 hours, though you can go back and complete them again if you want to get more gold or unlock the game’s secret ending. . In addition, there are innocents in the village whose minds can be used to earn bonuses. All of these levels are nice to look at and designed to fit the theme, even if the bright colors are overloaded at first glance and make orientation difficult. However, they are equipped with almost the same opponents and are quite short – especially the boss fights are less levels than short interludes.
