Session Skate Sim PS5 Free Download Romslab Those are the words I uttered to myself repeatedly after failing to land a basic kickflip in Session: Skate Sim’s tutorial for what must have been the twentieth time. If like me, you have years of experience built up with the genre, then, in all honesty, that may be more of a hindrance than a help as you struggle to wrap your head around the completely alien control scheme. To be fair to the developers, my lack of ability is totally on me rather than any fault with the controls. Going down the sim route has led them to come up with what is, on paper at least, a genius move that sees each analog stick responsible for controlling your skater’s left and right foot respectively. With the left analog stick occupied with controlling the left foot, that leaves the triggers responsible for shifting your weight left and right to turn accordingly. ROMSLAB

Pulling off tricks then becomes a matter of using a mixture of sticks and triggers to manipulate the player’s weight and legs, causing the board to shift accordingly. Whereas the games I grew up on focused on memorizing button inputs and combos, Session: Skate Sim demands you pay attention to the physics and body position of your skater on the screen. It does begin to make sense eventually, and you will at some point start thinking of your sticks as feet, which will allow you to process which way you need to move them in order to get your board to move as desired. Having said that, I’d be lying if I said that even now after a dozen or so hours I felt comfortable with the controls. That’s not to say that’s a bad thing necessarily. In fact, presenting even the most basic of tricks as insurmountable tasks that require hours of playtime to master lends itself to a highly rewarding experience.
A complete tutorial will help you get started, and you can choose from four difficulty levels!
Many screams of delight left my body as I successfully landed a kickflip for the first time, accompanied by a feeling of satisfaction that not even my craziest Tony Hawk’s: Pro Skater 3 combos were able to elicit from me. It’s a game of baby steps; hours of frustration punctuated by little moments of progress, and for that reason, I see many people ditching it immediately, such is the human desire for instant results. Stick with it though, and you will be rewarded. That ollie will soon become a kickflip, that kickflip soon becomes a kickflip into a grind down a daunting handrail on a staircase, and so on it goes. As an experience designed to capture the real journey of learning to skateboard (although bear in mind, this is coming from someone who ditched skating in his mid-teens), Session: Skate Sim largely succeeds. Every now and again I would nail something, perform some feat of majesty and the control scheme started to stick and feel more natural. Even things like your grinds take effort, you don’t just ollie and press a button to grind, you have to control both feet and actually line up the board correctly, otherwise, it’s a face full of concrete. Once you get your noggin around the controls and once you can start to perform tricks without thinking too much about your thumbs, Session really gets rewarding. When you perform a trick, you worked for it, it’s not easy by any means but the payoff is worth the initial pain. When you fly off a set of stairs, laser-flip onto a handrail and kickflip off the other end unharmed. You know you worked for that and it feels incredible. Just like rival 2020 skateboarding sim Skater XL, in Session each thumbstick represents a skater’s corresponding foot.
Extensive customization system for your skater and skateboard. By completing challenges, you’ll earn money to spend in skate shops.
Executing flip tricks and grinds requires precisely finessing each stick like you’re trying to crack into a safe. Turning controls are mapped to the triggers, a mind-melting obstacle that took hours for me to hurdle after decades of that being a job for the left stick – and only compounded by the fact that turning is still mapped to the left stick in Session… when the skater is off the board. Unfortunately there aren’t any grab controls, but even without them I was regularly turning my hands into pretzels trying to make tricks. This isn’t a bad thing per se; it’s just very challenging. However, the complexity does feel likely to be too much for some, such is the steepness of the learning curve here. I’m not confident that a lot of non-skaters or casual skateboarding fans would stick it out to crash through that initial barrier, though Session doesn’t necessarily do itself any favours in that regard. There’s actually a pretty long list of smart gameplay tuning options that can make things noticeably more manageable, but the initial tutorial doesn’t really point any of that out. The most helpful one for me was the option to change the mapping of the sticks from left foot/right foot to front foot/back foot – purists may scoff at this concession, but all the controls being in reverse when riding switch was absolutely cooking my brain. But there are many, many more – pop height, grind alignment, hell, even the gravity can be adjusted. None of this truly turns Session into an arcade skating game, but it can make it a little more friendly. The control system in Session: Skate Sim is all about weight distribution and using the right amount of pressure on the board. The left stick controls your left foot, and the right stick controls your right foot.
Perform your moves, then switch to film mode to experience the action from your cameraman’s point of view and create the best clip.
To do a simple Ollie down some steps, you need to pick up speed by building speed with your foot, pull back on the right stick to make sure your right foot is at the back of the board, then push forward on the left stick to lift the front of the board to get air. Depending on how lightly or heavily you press down on the sticks will deem how high you get in the air. Factoring turning left or right by pressing the two trigger buttons is also something you’re going to need to get used to as well. Throwing all of these fundamental controls together builds the basis for everything you do, however, it is only the beginning. Depending on how you use your feet on the board, a variety of tricks can be pulled off, but they all take plenty of practice to do, and you’re not going to be doing countless tricks one after the other.

It might sound exhausting, but skateboarding isn’t easy. What doesn’t help is how missions won’t provide you with a lot of support in how to do certain tricks. Learning to manual is one of the first moves you need to learn, but there’s no command list that tells you how. Unless I’ve missed it (and I spent a good amount of time scanning every menu on the pause screen), you’re not told how to do it. It was only after I thought logically about it that I was able to do so by lightly pulling back on the right stick while stationary. However, I was then expected to manual after an Ollie onto a small circular platform. In fact, everything will feel alien to you. With the left stick controlling your left foot, you’ll be controlling your steering with the DualSense’s triggers. That’s weird. That’s very weird. X is used to push forward and Y gets you off your board so that you can walk around. Cloudy Valley Switch NSP
