I was looking on Steam for a game to play one Saturday night and Silenced immediately caught my eye. It wasn’t the promise of horror, because I have fallen for empty promises before. It was the image of the raggedy doll with only one eye and the quote “Her button eyes pierced us through, as if staring at our souls” that drew me in, wanting to see more. As with many typical horror stories, a group of teens head to an abandoned house to hang out. Ashly is a vigilante of sorts, sacrificing the sinners to the trapped, tortured souls in order to atone for her undisclosed sins. She is guided by a maniacal, unnamed spirit, only referenced to as “Her.” With each turn of the page you start to learn the dark pasts of each teen, realizing none of them are who they seemed to be. Although there are multiple outcomes, I only experienced two, and the prompts to make decisions are minimal. The game should have had more opportunities to influence the narrative or perhaps given control over the order in which each teen is sacrificed. The soundtrack is haunting and I really enjoyed the harder “rock” feel in some segments of the game, but you’ll notice the songs looping quite a bit.

Unique design of characters and monsters

Additionally, the transitions from one segment of the game to another is a little jarring. None of these technical imperfections prevent me from recommending this game. The storyline is solid and genuinely creeped me out more than any horror film or game experience in quite some time. The sins and deaths of each character are described in horrific detail, and the reveal at the end of my gameplay was quite a shock to me. If you want to be creeped out and have the chance to bring justice to the world in a disturbing way, then you need to check this game out. If you want to activate the autoread mode, you need to pause the game and select that option from the pause menu. The same goes for the skip function, so if you’re a trophy hunter and want to speed things up and skip all dialogue, you’ll have to pause the game and then select the skip function from the pause menu. Do know that using this skip feature is currently a bit glitchy since it can end up skipping the section where you can get one of the trophies! Hopefully, this is something that Sometimes You can patch soon for trophy hunters. And speaking of trophies, while this is not a Cross-Buy release – as is usually the case for games from Sometimes You, there’s a separate purchase for the PlayStation 4 version of a game.

The dark and terrifying story with unusual twists

The good news for trophy hunters is that it does feature a Platinum trophy! The list includes 11 Gold trophies, and they will be tied with getting each of the different endings that the game has to offer, including the true ending. Due to there being bad endings, you should save early and save often by using the save slots at your disposal so that you can see all bad endings while also being able to go back, load a save, and correct your course. Silenced: The House is a horror visual novel on PlayStation 5 that feels a bit all over the place. Its story is cliché, the art style feels weird, and the game is a bit on the short side. It’s the first game from Graven Visual Novels, and it shows. Silenced: The House is out on PlayStation 5 with a .99 asking price. More specifically, their faces were made using it while their bodies were made with…something else.

Gloomy and dark atmosphere

What makes the out of place nature of the dialogue portraits all the more apparent is how much they clash with the sepia backgrounds. The background images make excellent use of this art style but Rinmaru designs were not made with monochrome color schemes in mind. These character designs stick out like an intelligent comment on a Breitbart article during the dialogue sequences as a result. Aside from the bad character designs, everything else is solid and appropriate.Music is tense and atmospheric and the illustrations are frighteningly gruesome. But yeah, just about everything here is riding on the story given that the characters are unlikable assholes that you feel no remorse for when they inevitably get slaughtered.

While I suspect that this may have been intentional as part of a twist, there are some aspects of these characters that came across as unnecessarily grating and only sour the mood of the whole thing. Our two male protagonists are misogynist fuckboys who can’t seem to go three lines without slut shaming yet Kate is equally unlikable in terms of snobbishness. Oh and also ableism. Rinmaru only lets you create the face and upper chest area so it meant one would just need to wing it there. I am not going to say that using a program like Rinmaru is bad altogether, but the best choice of action would have been to use it for a basis for their designs that you can draw later without the limitations on an online dress up program.  DRAGON BALL FighterZ Switch
