I had a hard time getting used to the “combat” at first, and couldn’t figure out how to summon the meteor, but I managed to get through to the fourth cloud layer. You’ll encounter new types of robots with different attacks as you make your way through cloud layers, which makes it more difficult. The story sets the stage with a brief but effective cutscene: massive space-travelling creatures known as Leviathans have landed on a planet to rest. Unfortunately, humanity, predictably, sees them as nothing more than a resource to be mined. Energy-hungry drones are dispatched to harvest their power, threatening the peaceful giants.

Where your goal is to destroy the endless waves of flying orb-bots, flying higher with each run until the Leviathan is saved!

A rebel and eco-warrior who rides on the backs of these majestic beasts to fend off waves of robotic attackers. That’s all you need, really. The story is minimalist, but it gives purpose to the action. And surprisingly, it works. You begin to grow attached to the Leviathan, and each run feels like you’re protecting a living, breathing creature, your sky-whale bestie, if you will. You start each run mounted on the Leviathan’s back, bouncing from one enemy drone to another using a grappling hook-like mechanic. It’s fast, fluid, and surprisingly strategic once you get into the rhythm. At times, you’ll need to land back on the Leviathan to eliminate leech-like parasites feeding off its energy. These moments offer crucial energy rewards, which feed into the game’s upgrade systems. New enemy types are introduced at a nice pace, keeping each run feeling fresh. And true to roguelike form, death is only a temporary setback. When you fall, you return to the hub area with loot to spend and new features potentially unlocked. However, I found the moment-to-moment gameplay.

Quickly jump from enemy to enemy while chaining special attacks, scoring combos, and harnessing your enemies’ power!

Which sees you zipping between drones at the press of a button and careful aim of the control stick, to be less enamouring. It does improve as you build up your stats, buy upgrades and when you complete challenges during runs, but that combo-heavy, basic framework of the gameplay just never quite gelled for me. So what do I know? Not all games can be equally appreciated by everyone, of course, and I’d suggest that if you like the look of Skies Above from its description, and perhaps its trailer, then you may well enjoy the game a lot more than I did. You are a human from a rebel faction, who has dedicated your time to help save the leviathan whales who once called earth a haven. When these majestic leviathan whales were rediscovered by greedy humans, instead of welcoming them, they tried to exploit them for resources. They built a robot army to eliminate the whales and it’s up to the resistance to protect them as they try to escape. Skies Above follows the story of leviathans who are under attack by robots constructed by greedy humans wanting more. As a rebel your duty is to protect these creatures from the harm these humans and robots are procuring.

Forge and upgrade runes in the camp to gain special abilities and make the Leviathan even more powerful so you can level up even further!

Each area focuses on the concept of preparation and defense. The rebel camp starts off simple with an area in which you can upgrade various attributes. The first three that are available to upgrade are life, speed, and greed. Which life allows to expand the leviathan’s overall health, speed helps your whale get further into the flight, and greed improves the amount of currency you can obtain. More options are unlocked as you proceed in the upgrades. The traditional ground is replaced with a seemingly endless expanse of swirling clouds, punctuated by floating islands of varying sizes and composition.

These islands, remnants of a fractured world or perhaps pieces of a larger cosmic puzzle, are meticulously crafted with an eye for detail that is both visually stunning and narratively significant. Each environment tells a silent story, hinting at the history of this broken world and the lives that once thrived within it.
