Each unit type generates ‘essence’ to power spells for specific schools (about half the spellbook is for multi-school spells), even if that unit is down to its last dude, which adds more tactical variety to your ability to either pile all your crossbowmen, say, into one hardy unit that can endure and distribute more damage, or to split them into two or even three weaker ones that generate more magic.

You need to be expanding and pushing always, because anything you don’t hoover up can go to the enemy instead. But they can’t be everywhere, so even a weaker side can sometimes use harassing raids and feint tactics to unnerve and undermine a stronger one. Each faction’s unit roster is small but unique, and varied enough to resist reducing them to one gimmick or playstyle. Loth represents a dark land ruled by necromancers and their undead hoards. Barya is the trade faction, throwing off the chains of the Empire and forming an independent merchant state. Rana, the swamp dwellers who have been oppressed, is attempting to reclaim their heritage. Players now have the choice of one of these four factions. Each plays a bit differently and has unique combat and unit focuses. The game also features beautiful, fully illustrated cutscenes with great in-game dialogue. The story is also well-written, with each faction having different storylines and objectives.

There are no details, but one faction is called the Vanir, and the other is called the Roots, which I am very excited about. It is very reminiscent of the Flood from Halo. I also played through the story of Rasc, a freed frogling slave who raises a rebellion against his former masters. Again, the main character here is compelling and above all likable, which helps to carry you through the admittedly superb campaign. The two years in access have done the world of good for Songs of Conquest, allowing Lavapotion to balance the difficulty almost perfectly.

The bulk of the game isn’t the combat, though, but rather the exploration of the world. Each campaign features an element of city management, as you reclaim hubs and then build outlying buildings to establish footholds. Buildings like farms, watchtowers, and taverns can be constructed on vacant plots, allowing you to bring in resources and hire more soldiers. Grand armouries and academies are raised to research new inventions and better weapons and tactics, while you explore the gorgeous pixel-art world with your chosen hero, or heroes.
