This is definitely a game for people who don’t mind doing a bit of reading. Each loading screen is packed with handy hints and there’s a fairly comprehensive combat tutorial at the very beginning, but it’s filled with a lot of game universe-specific terminology so I’ll admit the majority of it fell out of my brain almost immediately after reading it. At first I struggled with the various items and equipment I picked up, not knowing what to do with all of it. Luckily, there’s an extremely handy resource in the pause menu that helped me get to grips with everything a lot faster – the DDO NaviMenu.

This menu has it all! Tooltips, explanations of Soulbit combos, enemy data, a glossary of terms, and much more. My gameplay experience since finding this menu has been a lot smoother. Knowing that I can look something up any time I have an issue makes Soulvars a lot less stressful. However, I know that this kind of tutorial can be terrible for many people. Generally, I prefer games to teach me everything I need to know as I progress through a game and I think that hiding all of this information in a not-immediately-obvious menu is inaccessible as hell, but at least it exists and you’re not left completely in the dark. It’s clear that Soulvars is inspired by old JRPGs and that the developers poured a lot of love into this project. There’s the option to apply a VHS-style filter to the game to make it feel closer to the inspiration source material which I appreciate, and the menu says you can switch between illustrations and pixel art. I’ve flicked this switch a few times because I really love the illustration style of the game’s key art, but I haven’t noticed any change in my gameplay. Where are my illustrated team members?Of course, apart from the totally awesome music, what really lured me into the game was its deep combat system.

Deep, exhilarating battles and character growth

Players take control of three characters that each have their own moves and skills in battle. Gear that you equip to your characters will come with their own deck of moves or Soulbits, which you can combine to unleash powerful attacks, charges, or defenses. This unique mechanic will really require you to think strategically with each random enemy encounter, as certain combinations will yield normal, quick or heavy attacks. SOULVARS ostensibly tells the story of Yakumo, a freelance Soulbearer who takes on contracts to eliminate technological monsters that have taken over much of the world. Along the way, Yakumo picks up a few additional party members to aid in his quest to defeat these Dominators. Other Soulbearers appear as well, sometimes as non-playable allies and other times as formidable bosses. And that’s about the most storytelling SOULVARS has to offer within the game itself. There’s a fair amount of dialog, but it mostly boils down to characters barking one-liners at each other or using choppy jargon to explain what’s happening on screen.

Super-enhanced port of acclaimed mobile original

It’s hard to follow and deeply uninteresting, even after a predictable, mid-game twist that feels entirely unearned. When you begin Soulvars, you will not know how your character is or what you’re mission is. You’re trusted into the tutorial battles, where you’ll learn the surface-level basics of this game’s mechanics, and then you’re off on your own. You’ll learn more about your mission and the characters who join you along the way, but during my time playing, I never had any idea who was who or what was what. All I knew was I was kicking anyone’s ass who stood in my way.

Evidently, you play as a Soulbearer, basically humans with alternate Souls who fight against the invading Dominators. You play as Yakumo, who works for the Dominator Disposal Organization and is tasked with clearing out the city of all threats with the help of a few friends. If I’m being honest, the writing handles character introductions terribly. I never felt attached to the mission at hand, and when characters left the party, I would simply shrug and move on.
