I enjoyed the game so much, I immediately tracked down its predecessor, Sparkle Unleashed, also available on Xbox One. The production values of Sparkle 2 became quite evident in comparison; while the older game certainly is enjoyable, this new one is even moreso. I love that the game’s core mechanic – the marble shooter – was changed from a sliding one in Unleashed to a static one in 2. The change means the game is far more strategic as you need to set up shots from the one position. It forces you to really think and plan out your (literal) angles of attack.

Things start to become more interesting after you make three matches in a row and a random power-up appears on the field. You can activate it by hitting it with a ball, and a number of things can happen. Some of the more common include a wild card ball that matches any color it touches and a bomb that detonates anything in its vicinity. Other power-ups include getting rid of all instances of one color on the screen, a fireball that destroys a specific ball, or something that turns all of the balls it hits into one color so they can be destroyed in a later move. The power-ups give you a small chance to grab them before they disappear, but you can have multiple power-ups appear at the same time so long as you keep making consecutive matches expands this idea by having an upgradeable launcher. I felt that these options were useful as it enables you to tailor the game to how you want to play it. However, the issue here is underneath it all, it’s still the same game. You’re still firing marbles upon marbles to stop them reaching the end, and this can become boring very quickly. To combat this, the game offers different game modes – story mode, challenge mode and survival. All of which have defining qualities and vary the game to an extent. For me, the varying game modes are just there.

An independent sequel and a spiritual successor to the first installment suitable for both new and existing fans of the series.

They aren’t individual enough to keep me changing between them. I felt that story mode was more than enough this game has a narrative. I know, I didn’t expect it either. But don’t worry, this is nothing that you have to play real attention to. I certainly didn’t and I don’t feel like you would if you did the same. The story mode basically consists of 90 levels in which you acquire five keys before progressing to the end. After completion, the levels can then be replayed on a higher difficulty. The actual story behind this never felt important enough to pay attention to, and the disappointingly bland end reassured me that I hadn’t missed out.

The Orb Slinger will start off basic, allowing you to see the next orb that will become available and allow you to swap it with the current orb if it’s advantageous. Enchantments are earned as you progress through the levels to add some variety to the slinger. To add some speed you could choose the Speed Unleashed enchantment, or you could have opt to have a power-up replace every tenth orb.
