However, I was left disappointed after about 2 hours and hopeless by the 5th. In this review I will be taking a close look at why Spirit Hunters isn’t fun despite being very similar to Vampire Survivors, both by looking at it as a standalone game and comparing it to Vampire Survivors. When you start a “run” both in Spirit Hunters your only inputs consist of moving around the map and picking new abilities or existing ability upgrades whenever you level up. The rest of the combat is basically idle and automatic. While Vampire Survivors solves this limited intractability by making the choices meaningful, in Spirit Hunters the upgrades you choose are boring and meaningless.

The real reason playing around with weapons in Vampire Survivors is much more fun than Spirit Hunters is simple, SYNERGY. That “end” in Vampire Survivors existed to simply kill you, though you could find a way to even overcome that. This is just one of several differences that makes Spirit Hunters a breath of fresh air. Instead of simply copying and pasting every element, veterans of Vampire Survivors will notice specific changes that we’ll go over in some detail. Each skill can be upgraded to a max level of 25, meaning you will not be able to obtain every upgrade, making choice, and luck, paramount to your build success. In Vampire Survivors, each weapon you pick up has a chance to synergise with other weapons and items, resulting in a new upgraded version of the weapon. This is called evolution. Though there are even more changes, the last one we will go over is the progression board, or, in this case, the “Divinity Web.” As you adventure across each map, you will discover several types of resources, and these can be spent on the Divinity Web to purchase permanent upgrades, covering the likes of attack power, ability enhancements, new character and map unlocks, harder difficulties which add new enemies and bosses, different modes of play, and more.
