It’s a big world to explore, filled with murals that depict past events and there’s no mini map to guide you. All we get are occasional location prompts from our guardian friend, who leads us on this journey as we fight back against the mysterious plague. We say fight, but there’s no combat here; this experience is completed via solving environmental puzzles. Some are easily dealt with, like matching symbols between a set of statues, but it gets more complicated as you advance. Starting off with a basic moveset of running, jumping, and picking up objects, the Fox gradually unlocks new spiritual powers, which require spirit energy to activate. That’s obtained from blue flowers and you can transfer this energy to power up stone tethers.

Old Dog, Few Tricks

When powered up, the Fox can release bursts of energy to destroy any rooted corruption, channel your spiritual body to another location for a short amount of time, and spirit dash to land those extra-long jumps. Staffs are also lying about, alongside the skeletal remains of some long-deceased shaman spirits. Reuniting them with staffs opens new pathways to begin with, though it becomes more of an optional extra later on. The story is split into chapters but all you need is an afternoon to complete it, taking several hours without getting lost. For the most part, Spirit of the North comes together well, presenting us a refined artistic experience that’ll have you hooked, effectively using environmental storytelling to draw you into this world. Gameplay can be slow paced at times, which will be admittedly off-putting for some, and there are times where it isn’t clear what’s needed to advance, but the game rewards those with patience. All of this is backed up by a fully orchestrated soundtrack which truly brings this world to life, though song changes aren’t especially subtle. That said, it holds several flaws which are hard to ignore and a lot of this regards the controls. This isn’t such a problem during basic exploration, letting you run across large open fields, but it can feel a bit stiff when it comes to jumping. Considering some platforming segments require greater precision, it becomes easy to make mistakes and those can be time consuming. Disappointingly, this was also an issue within the PS4 edition, so it is a shame that Infuse Studios didn’t spend more time fixing this.

Be a fox for once

Foxes have been particularly popular in the video game world for a while, which is why Spirit of the North: Enhanced Edition spoke to me directly. I’d seen the title on other platforms before and wished it on Steam for a while – but it’s only on the PlayStation 5 that I’ve finally been able to make my wish come true and play this game with the fox. However, I did not receive the game I expected. Spirit of the North begins without much explanation: I watch a fox running through a snowy landscape, apparently following a red mist in the wind. Very seldom during my journey do I come across fragments that try to advance the story, but I can’t see any context in them. And that’s a shame, because that way I’m just steering a fox through a relatively respectable, if very kit-like, landscape and can’t make the fox’s target my own. In Spirit of the North: Enhanced Edition , I can also awaken shamans by bringing them well-hidden shaman sticks. It is not clear to me who these shamans are or what significance they had. All I know is that I get trophies for this and if I find them all in a chapter I unlock a new skin for my fox. However, these shamans don’t seem to have any more meaning, which is a shame, since they would certainly have contributed a large part to the story.

Spirit of the North Enhanced Edition is a laid back, 3rd person adventure puzzle game. In it, you take control of a fox whose journey becomes intertwined with that of the Spirit of the Northern Lights. Together, you will travel across the beautiful scenery of Iceland to figure out what happened to its inhabitants and how to put things right. The game has been designed in such a way that narration, speech and text are not included. Instead, it is up to the player to take in their surroundings and piece together visual information to progress. The story is told through tablets found throughout the world. You’ll start off with just basic movement and earn abilities as you progress. Using these abilities requires you to be infused with Pure Ancient Energy from Spirit Blooms. Spirit Blooms are blue flowers that you’ll find all around the landscapes you explore. I found that the movement could be a little clunky at times. You will find some of the platforming to be less friendly than you’d like. This is, however, forgivable given the size of the team that worked on the game and the overall quality presented. Spirit of the North doesn’t waste any time with introductions or hand-holding. Right from the jump, you’re in control of your intrepid red fox and free to roam the snowy landscape as you make your way to an ominous mountain in the distance.
